Position Description
Tulane University School of Medicine is seeking accomplished and experienced physician leaders to be considered for the position of Chair of the Department of Urology.
The ideal candidate should be a visionary leader with the skill, knowledge, and temperament to navigate the modern healthcare landscape in the Gulf South. This opportunity comes at a time of transition and growth for the clinical endeavors of the medical school and the department. We are seeking a physician leader with a strong and proven commitment to excellence in research, education, and the delivery of care.
The Department of Urology is an integral part of the history, present, and future of the Tulane School of Medicine, and enjoys renown for inaugurating many urologic practices that have now become mainstays in clinical practice. These include percutaneous lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, transperineal cryosurgery for prostate cancer, laparoscopic nephrectomy, bipolar TURP and robotic prostatectomy. We are the first institution in the Gulf South to introduce daVinci robotic surgery, including S, Si, Xi, and singleport (SP) models.
The Department of Urology boasts a fully accredited five-year residency program with a proven track record of success. Our current RRC-ACGME full accreditation allows for three resident selections per year. Our clinical rotations extend to five institutions where our faculty practices.
East Jefferson General Hospital (EJGH)
is the new flagship Tulane academic medical center with 420 beds, over 650 physicians and 3,000 medical staff. High-level complex cardiac care, advanced stroke care, bone marrow and abdominal transplant, and advanced interventional pulmonary programs provide tertiary and quaternary care for the Southeast region. EJGH was the first hospital in Louisiana to achieve Magnet status recognition, Leapfrog “A” rating, and has undergone a $220 million dollar investment and expansion including the emergency room, intensive care units, operating rooms, and interventional radiology. At the time of this writing, EJGH has 26 operating rooms as of November 2024. Also recently acquired is an “attached” Ambulatory Surgical Center that will be opening in Q1 or Q2 of 2025. This new facility will be overseen as part of the Main OR operations. EJGH currently has 6 heart catheterization laboratories and 4 interventional radiology suites, with 4 new catheterization rooms opened this past year. An advanced pulmonary procedural suite is adjacent to the main operating room. EJGH’s transformation included build-out of state-of-the-art critical care units (neurological, abdominal transplant, bone marrow transplant) with a heart failure/cardiovascular critical care unit being actively designed.
This facility is actively designing and planning to build a new Tulane Urology clinic on its campus with approximately 7,000 sq feet, 11 exam rooms, and 3 procedure rooms to support the department's growth. The goal is to open this clinic by Q3 2025. EJGH has 4 DaVinci Xi robots with teaching consoles and is evaluating expanding their fleet, expecting to continue with the new leadership of the Department.
