The Sr R&D Engineer is responsible for designing and executing experimental pilot plant studies to develop new or improved processes. This position will primarily support R&D programs for Lummus' Clean Fuels and Chevron Lummus Global groups. The engineer may also provide technical support for proposals, studies, basic engineering packages, commercial design, and commercial plant start-up. The engineer reports to an R&D Director in Lummus' R&D organization in Pasadena, Texas.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technology innovations from concepts through to commercialization. Innovations could involve work with process conditions or also work with catalyst formulation.
- Responsible for designing experimental programs and executing pilot plant runs by working with Maintenance, Operations and Analytical groups within the Lummus R&D organization. Need to communicate objectives of each run to the R&D Director as well as the Business Unit supporting the work. Provide daily supervision of this 24/7 operation.
- Execute the program compliant with HSE requirements, including following the "Management of Change" process, generating written operating instructions for the test unit, participation in Process Hazard Analysis meetings, and other PSM-related activities.
- Responsible for data analysis and issuing reports and updates to the R&D Director and the Business Unit. Communicate effectively with the Technology Manager in the Business Unit to summarize and convey results from the experiments.
- The pilot equipment will frequently need to be changed to generate the needed data. This role requires some design of equipment and guiding the Maintenance/Operations groups through pilot plant modification projects (i.e. sizing equipment, preparing equipment lists & specifications, assisting with equipment costing, updating P&IDs, etc.)
- Bachelor, Master or PhD in Chemical Engineering; PhD is preferred
- 2-10 years of relevant experience with pilot plant operation, experimental planning, and catalyst testing.
- 2-10 years of demonstrated R&D experience is preferred.
- Strong background in fundamental chemical engineering principles (thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, unit operations, reaction kinetics, fluid mechanics, process modeling)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; able to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders and team members
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage projects and operations and deliver on their objectives
