The FTOL must have substantial breadth and depth of experience and knowledge in UAS configurations and operations. Building on this foundation, they will work closely with Business Development, program, and department leadership to define system requirements, achieve the necessary approvals and certifications, and lead flight testing and entry-into-market operations. Initially serving as the technical lead, the FTOL will be responsible for quickly building out an operations team to support the early stages of the product life cycle. In parallel, they will be a primary stakeholder in the development of the concept of operations for new platforms and associated use cases. Responsibilities
Build out flight test operations, potentially across multiple test sites and generations of product Lead work packages with the Regulatory and Policy teams to define certification and operational pathways for commercial operations Develop early commercial operations teams Collaborate with the Flight Research and Flight Test Lead in SOP development and implementation Pilot remotely operated vehicles Provide detailed feedback and recommendations for system improvements Develop and uphold standard operating procedures and regulatory compliance Foster and maintain a strong safety culture Required
Experience leading operational and/or flight test teams for novel aerospace products Experience with Group 3+ UAS development and operations Experience in requirements development Knowledge of system safety best practices and methods Demonstrated strong leadership skills Ability to travel and support remote flight test operations Part 61 Commercial Pilot Certificate (any category) with an instrument rating, or the ability to obtain one Broad understanding of aircraft structural, aerodynamic, propulsion, and systems design and operation Desired
Previous experience with Group 4+ remotely operated aircraft Previous experience in a test pilot role Advanced degree in a STEM field This position must meet US export control compliance requirements, therefore a candidate must qualify as a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15. “US Person” includes US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees. Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $173,700 - $231,600/yr The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
