Highway & Roads Market Sector Director
Primary Responsibilities
Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR's matrix management structure. The Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, with nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures. HDR provides services like bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.
This role requires understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures at various levels. The responsibilities are divided into three main areas:
- Market leadership and business development (about 70%)
- Staff development (20%)
- Support to Operations (10%)
The Director sets the vision for HDR’s growth and service expansion in this sector, supporting regional and area leadership to meet growth, revenue, and profit goals. They develop and implement strategies in coordination with various leaders and maintain communication to execute growth plans.
HDR maintains contracts with many state departments of transportation and local agencies in the US and is expanding internationally. The Director supports business development outside the US, engaging with local clients and offering comprehensive services including advisory, environmental, and strategic communications.
The role involves supporting client management, defining growth initiatives, coordinating best practices, and enhancing HDR's marketplace image. Responsibilities include:
- Creating and executing strategic vision
- Managing key clients and projects
- Promoting HDR services
- Participating in industry associations and leadership roles
- Building strategic partnerships and industry presence
Staff Development
Lead an organization that supports client service, staff growth, and recruitment. Responsibilities include managing P&L, driving technical excellence, staffing, and participating in performance reviews.
Support to Operations
Assist regional leaders in project delivery, monitor performance indicators, promote quality control, and facilitate knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
Preferred:
- 20+ years in highway/bridge planning or engineering
- PE license or equivalent
- Leadership in industry associations
Required:
- Bachelor’s in Engineering or related field
- At least 12 years of industry experience with leadership
- Strong communication, client management, business skills, and a proactive attitude
