Introduction Inspire. Lead. Innovate. Prince William Public Libraries (PWPL) is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Assistant Library Director for Public Services to help guide our system into the future. In this key leadership role, you will co-lead a dedicated team of branch managers and play a central role in advancing the goals outlined in our 2024–2028 Strategic Plan.
We’re looking for a dynamic leader who is passionate about public service, energized by emerging library trends, and driven to meet the evolving needs of a diverse and growing community. The ideal candidate excels in collaborative leadership, strategic communication, staff development, and operational management.
As a senior member of PWPL’s Leadership Team, the Assistant Library Director helps shape policy, guide long- and short-term planning, support program development, and inform resource allocation to ensure we deliver impactful, customer-focused library services across the system.
About This Role: The Assistant Library Director for Public Services plays a key leadership role in ensuring the success and consistency of public service operations across the library system. This position: Supervises six Branch Managers, including hiring, conducting annual performance evaluations, addressing performance concerns, and coaching staff for continuous improvement. Oversees the Public Services Division budget, including financial planning and the completion of related documentation. Fosters strong internal customer service by building collaborative relationships with library staff and other county departments. Reviews, revises, and develops library policies and procedures to support strategic goals and maintain operational excellence. Manages division-wide projects, initiatives, and daily operations to ensure efficient, high-quality service delivery. Actively participates on various internal and cross-departmental committees. Serves as a member of the Library’s Leadership Team, contributing to system-wide planning, policy development, and decision-making. Minimum Requirements: Master's degree in library or information science and 4 years of progressive library supervisory experience to include at least 2 years as a Branch Manager.
Preferences: 4 years of progressively responsible library supervisory experience, including at least 2 years as a Branch Manager or in an equivalent leadership role. 2 year's experience reviewing, editing, and developing policies and procedures. Demonstrated experience managing operational budgets for a minimum of 2 years. 2 years of experience leading or coordinating projects, including planning, execution, and evaluation. Special Requirements: The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on County business.
Work Schedule: This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week exempt position located at the Administrative Support Center. Office Hours are 8a.m. – 5p.m. Monday – Friday and this position will need to be available while library branches are open in case of emergency situations.
Hiring Salary Range: $104,500.50 – 120,173.63
