OB FUNCTION:
This qualifiedcandidate will be assisting in the public services aspect of the library butmay also support with processing library materials. This is a non-essential, non-exemptposition. Individuals in this positionshould be able to complete the majority of their work with a minimum amount ofsupervision.
This person may work until 6:00pm and will be expected to worksome Saturdays.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Includes any combination of the followingillustrative examples of duties and responsibilities (and other duties asassigned.)
- Must be able to use the computer to perform variousduties such as checking materials in and out, editing records, search formaterials, etc.
- Must be able to assist patrons with various requestsfor assistance
- Must be able to shelve library materials in theirproper places and be familiar with the ordering of books and the Dewey Decimalsystem
- Mustbe able to process library materials i.e. property stamps, bar codes,implanting the security tags, spine labels, book covers, etc.
- Mustbe able to drive the bookmobile or participate in bookmobile services to thepublic i.e. book selection, checking materials in and out, delivery, etc.
- Otherduties and projects as assigned

EDUCATIONAND/ OR EXPERIENCE: Must be a high school graduate. Aworking knowledge of libraries is preferred with the ability to learn libraryterminology, techniques, and mandatory procedures.
MATHEMATICALSKILLS: This person must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using wholenumbers. The person who fills thisposition must be able to make change, calculate fines, and compile statisticalreports.
REASONINGABILITY:
Abilityto define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished inwritten, oral, or diagram form. Abilityto interpret library rules and regulations.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Theability to perform basic office procedures such as filing
- Abilityto use basic office equipment such as typewriters, adding machines, computerswith basic Microsoft Office knowledge, and the navigation of the internet
- Mustbe able to provide transportation to and from work, run errands when necessary,and be comfortable traveling to library-sponsored workshops that may requireovernight stays

This job involves equal parts of standing andsitting. While performing this job, theemployee must be able to climb a ladder and retrieve materials from shelvesapproximately seven feet from the ground. They must be able to bend to retrieve library materials from the bottomshelf on the ground level. Some librarymaterials weigh up to 15 or 20 pounds per item. Must be able to push or pull a loaded book cart that weighsapproximately 60 pounds. Sometimesmoving equipment such as computers and furniture will be expected. In addition, the lifting and packing ofbooks in boxes or bags for mailing or delivery is expected.
WORKENVIRONMENT: The work environment for this position is primarily inside located at the Lutcheror Vacherie location. It involvesproviding services to large groups at a time and quickly helping one patron afterthe other. It will involve patrolling the library and implementing thelibrary's policies for behavior and electronic access. On occasion, the employee will be asked toassist the patron in finding information that the employee personally may findoffensive or morally wrong.
