About The Role
Techno is seeking a
Resident Engineer (Utilities)
to join our team in New Jersey/New York. In this role, the ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring utility installations are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with design specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. This position plays a critical role in managing utility interfaces, supporting tunneling operations, and ensuring proper coordination with public and private utility stakeholders.
What You'll Do
Supervise and manage the construction, relocation, and protection of utility infrastructure including water, sewer, gas, electric, telecom, and steam systems. Coordinate with utility agencies for utility permits, inspections, and connections. Review and oversee utility-related designs, submittals, shop drawings, and field installations to ensure accuracy and constructability. Support and interpret utility mark-outs and ensure comprehensive utility mapping for field coordination. Lead utility coordination meetings and document agency communications and contractor activities. Monitor construction progress, schedules, and safety procedures associated with utility work. Resolve field conflicts and utility issues in collaboration with contractors, inspectors, and design teams. Support TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) operations from a utility/power readiness perspective. Document daily construction activities and ensure all utility records, as-builts, and coordination logs are up to date.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. 10 years of experience in utility construction and coordination on civil infrastructure projects in New York City and New Jersey. Proven track record managing complex infrastructure projects involving tunnels (e.g., transit, utility, water/sewer, or highway tunnels). Familiarity with tunnel construction methods (e.g., TBM, SEM, cut-and-cover), ground improvement techniques, and temporary support systems. Experience working with New York City or state agencies (e.g., MTA, NYCDDC, NYCDEP, NYCDOT) is highly preferred. High-voltage (26kV) substation design, particularly for tunnel boring machine (TBM) operations. Comprehensive knowledge of generators and automatic transfer switch (ATS) systems. Hands-on experience with 480V power distribution systems and components for heavy equipment. Familiarity with 13.2kV flexible high-voltage power cables used in mining and tunneling environments. Experience managing union electrical contractors or working alongside utility companies such as PSE&G is a plus.

The expected salary range for this role in the New York City Metropolitan Area is $84.13 - $110.58 per hour. The total compensation, including salary and bonuses, is determined by various factors such as experience, skill level, location, and qualifications, which are evaluated during the interview process
