We are seeking a
Lead R&D Engineer/Scientist
to work on the research, testing, and evaluation of refrigerant flammability properties to ensure compliance with industry safety standards and regulations. The engineer will focus on developing and assessing low-global-warming-potential (GWP) refrigerants, conducting flammability tests, and effectively communicating technical information to industry stakeholders and customers to facilitate their transition to environmentally safer refrigerant substitutes. Join a team dedicated to applying expertise and knowledge to technical projects, finding innovative, cost-effective solutions to improve research, techniques, procedures, products, and technologies. This role involves designing, developing, and testing to meet project objectives efficiently, as well as developing and commercializing new products and technologies. As a Lead R&D Engineer/Scientist at Honeywell, you will provide technical expertise, mentorship, and leadership to critical project teams, contribute to innovative solutions, and drive technological advancements to address global challenges. You must have:
A graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on combustion, Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field, or At least 5 years of experience in flammability testing/research, fire safety, or related fields within HVAC&R, chemical, or automotive industries. Knowledge of
combustion, flammability testing methods, fire dynamics, and heat transfer principles . Understanding of refrigerant thermodynamics and properties. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Effective communication skills for technical information dissemination to diverse stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with refrigerants Knowledge of
UL, ASHRAE, and ISO
flammability classification methods Hands-on experience with flammability test rig setup and operation This position is part of a transition to a new, independent company named Solstice Advanced Materials, expected to occur in late 2025 or early 2026. Our team is dedicated to delivering value and making a meaningful impact for our customers. The annual base salary for this position ranges from $139,000 to $174,000 in Buffalo, NY. Salary offers consider various factors including experience, education, skills, and market conditions. Design and conduct experiments to assess refrigerant flammability, including LFL, UFL, MIE, and burning velocity. Develop and validate test methods for ignition sources, flame propagation, and autoignition temperatures. Use CFD or other modeling techniques for flammability risk assessment. Ensure compliance with safety standards such as
ASHRAE 34, ISO 817 . Collaborate with regulatory and industry bodies to stay updated on safety guidelines. Assist in refrigerant development. Prepare technical reports and presentations for stakeholders. About Us
