Position Information
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Recreation - Outdoor Education, the Outdoor Excursions Program Coordinator is a critical member of the Recreation programming team responsible for the development, management, oversight, and assessment of the Outdoor Excursions program. These areas include the Outdoor Excursions Shop, Adventure Trips and Events, Equipment Rentals, Wilderness and Remote First Aid certification, Leadership Development, and Driver and Trailer training. Important duties include risk management, staffing and supervision, program development and implementation, and oversight and maintenance of facilities and equipment. The incumbent works closely with departmental, divisional, campus, and community partners to deliver client service-based programming that aligns with campus goals at all levels. The full salary range for the Outdoor Excursions Program Coordinator position is $56,000 - $96,400 annually. The expected pay scale for this position is $56,000 - $71,250 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Recreation - Outdoor Education, the Outdoor Excursions Program Coordinator is a critical member of the Recreation programming team responsible for the development, management, oversight, and assessment of the Outdoor Excursions program. These areas include the Outdoor Excursions Shop, Adventure Trips and Events, Equipment Rentals, Wilderness and Remote First Aid certification, Leadership Development, and Driver and Trailer training. Important duties include risk management, staffing and supervision, program development and implementation, and oversight and maintenance of facilities and equipment. The incumbent works closely with departmental, divisional, campus, and community partners to deliver client service-based programming that aligns with campus goals at all levels.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.
Oversees trip and event planning and logistics while working closely with and teaching student staff. Co-leads trainings/events and serves as a driver when there is a need for a higher level of supervision or skill. Reserves vehicles, facilities, and equipment for events. 20%
Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
Oversees Trip and OE Shop staff including hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluations, payroll assistance and disciplinary processes for student and part-time staff. Teaches and mentors student leaders in planning/organization, technical/outdoor, human interaction, educational/teaching skills, and reflection/self-awareness. Trains staff in group building, facilitation, and debriefing. Plans and manages Driver and Trailer Training program.15%
Has overall responsibility for equipment, facilities and budget for a large operational program. Coordinates all facility usage.
Assists the Assistant Director in the above mentioned responsibilities. Equipment Rentals and Trip Equipment: oversees, coordinates, and performs equipment organization, inspections, inventory, maintenance, repair, and purchase recommendations, and records appropriate documentation.10%
Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.
Represents Outdoor Excursions at campus and other events to increase customer awareness and share information. Utilizes social media, email, newsletters, and Fusion software to market programs/events and contact customers. 10%
Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.
In conjunction with Assistant Director and the department risk management staff, develops or updates necessary emergency procedures, safety practices, risk management processes, and reporting. Collaborates with department staff to ensure facility spaces and equipment are maintained as needed to meet industry standards for programmatic use. This includes implementing routine inspections, organization, cleaning, and maintenance. Assists with vehicle maintenance, accident reports, and vehicle safety. Develops and supports a culture of trust among staff while training, debriefing, evaluating, and reporting on processes, activities, trips, and events. 10%
As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.
Mentors student staff before, during, and after programs and work shifts. Provides excellent customer service. Utilizes Fusion software for Programs/Offerings and Equipment and other software applications in support of programming. 10%
Develops, schedules and makes programmatic and budget recommendations for highly diverse and complex programs and events. Performs short and long term planning for recreational program(s) and/or activities.
Develops and administers programs, strategic plans, goals, objectives and assessments. Reports on results, including strategies for process improvement. 5%
Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.
Maintains certification and training records of staff including CPR/ AED/ Wilderness and Remote First Aid/WFR and instructs WFA or WRFA classes for staff. Updates staff manuals, procedures, and guidelines as needed. 5%
Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement. 5%
Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives. 5%

Educational Requirements
Degree Requirement
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
Advanced degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation Administration, Leisure Studies, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or a related field. Preferred
Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid Certification within 6 months of hire. Required
Ability to obtain Wilderness and Remote First Aid Instructor Certification within 8 months of hire Required
Ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certification within 6 months of hire. Preferred
Experience in programming involving outdoor equipment, trips, and group/community building. Required
Experience leading and advising participants and teaching outdoor skills; ability to lead and supervise in potentially dangerous conditions, and extreme environmental conditions. Required
6 - 10 years of related experience . (Undergrad experience counts as 50% time. Experience must be outlined in resume/application) Required
Experience supervising or mentoring students, maintaining outdoor equipment, student development, and leadership training. Experience working with diverse populations/clientele. Preferred
Professional experience working in university outdoor programming including equipment rentals, adventure trips, and facilitation. Preferred
Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. Required
Red Cross CPR. Required
Standard First Aid Training Certification. Required
Wilderness First Responder Certification Required
Wilderness and Remote First Aid Instructor Certification Required
Rock Climbing Certification (PCIA or AMGA) Preferred
Leave No Trace Master Educator Certification Preferred
Demonstrates advanced client service leadership, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language. Demonstrated ability to incorporate key program information for inclusion in web-based and other marketing materials.
Advanced proficiency in the use of computer applications relevant to job duties.
Advanced knowledge of program activity and best practices. Demonstrated ability to analyze and improve programs and processes as needed.
Skills to deliver highly effective service orientation, program management, and make sound judgments decisions; able to use critical thinking skills to develop original and creative problem solving ideas in a varied and challenging environment.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.
Familiar with risk management practices for outdoor recreation programs and facilities.
