POSITION: PERSONAL INJURY LITIGATION PARALEGAL
Summary of Job: Personal injury litigation paralegal **** responsible for supporting attorneys in the various aspects of litigation, including investigation, pre-suit settlement demands, case preparation, management, and trial. Experience in nursing home and/or medical malpractice preferred but not required.
Job Description
- Investigate claims files, organize and request medical records, and work with clients to gather necessary materials and provide claim/case updates, as needed
- Prepare pre-suit settlement demand packages
- Open Estate files in wrongful death matters
- Research and analyze law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, and legal codes to prepare legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, or appeals, etc. for use by attorney
- Draft routine legal documents (summons, complaint, motions, notices of hearing, notices of depositions, subpoenas, etc.) for review and use by attorneys
- Schedules depositions and other meetings with clients, witnesses, experts, opposing counsel, court reporters and others
- Identifies, locates, interviews, and evaluates potential experts and sends expert packages for review
- Tracks requests for documents and regularly follows up on progress of receipt
- Regularly reviews files and proactively works to move cases forward
- Documents files and updates clients when necessary regarding status of case
· Draft discovery documents
· Participates in all aspects of discovery and file or trial preparation as required by supervising attorney
· Maintains an expert database and researches opposing counsel’s experts
· Files documents, both by snail mail and/or electronically, with the various courts
· Performs clerical duties such as typing and filing to the extent required to produce work product or assure proper organization of case files
· Remains flexible and open to requests for support or assistance outside of the scope of this job description and to other duties as directed by the supervising attorney
Job Requirements
- Litigation/mediation focused with trial experience
- Experience researching, identifying and negotiating medical liens, Medicare/Medicaid liens
- Team oriented and leadership driven
- Independent, self-starter with who takes initiative and always goes above and beyond
- Outgoing personality with patience to deal with a diverse group of attorneys, staff, and clients and to provide information with ordinary courtesy, diplomacy and tact
- Experience with technology, ideal candidate is tech savvy, open to improving methodologies and constantly integrating new ideas into processes
- Accurate typing ability of 45 wpm and comprehensive computer and office equipment experience
- Proficient in technology skills: Microsoft Office, Outlook, Sharefile
- Proficient in e-filing systems used in Wake County, and federal courts
- Exceptional writing skills and documentation including settlement statements, creating chronological support, and communications with clients and court systems
· Knowledge of legal principles and practices in order to assume responsibility of providing support for attorney team members in case management and information gathering at a level normally acquired through completion of an associate’s degree or certified paralegal education
· Knowledge of the various courts, their rules and filing requirements
· Demonstrated organizational, prioritization, and attention to detail skills to allow for timely, effective, and accurate performance of job duties
· Ability to maintain utmost integrity in confidential matters
Education : Minimum 2 year degree and/or paralegal certificate
Experience : 3-5 years; nursing home or medical malpractice experience preferred
Salary Range *: Very competitive within Paralegal field
Hours : 9 am – 5 pm in person (Monday – Friday)
