All full-time employees in this position are required to reside within 30 miles from any border of Tinley Park within 12 months of employment date. Residency in Indiana is not permitted.
Opportunity at a Glance
The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 56,000) seeks qualified applicants for the full-time position of Building Permit Technician in the Community Development Department which is comprised of three divisions: economic development, planning and building. All three divisions work together to strengthen and improve development services to its customers and the quality of life in Tinley Park. The Building Permit Technician is the primary point of customer contact for the Building Division and ensures that permit applications are processed promptly including answering questions, addressing concerns regarding the permit process, and facilitating timely issuing of permits.
Key Responsibilities This position will coordinate the permit intake and issuance process while reviewing and processing permit submittals for the accuracy and completeness of all information and issue all permits, certificates of occupancy, and temporary occupancies when each review is satisfied. Will prepare a variety of correspondence and forms related to the permitting process, maintain file management system, assist in preparing departmental reports, log inspection requests, and prepare field reports for daily inspection. Will also assist with elevator inspections and issuance of Village elevator certificates.
Will be responsible for providing general information regarding building codes, zoning ordinances, permits, and the review process while providing a high level of customer service to residents, businesses, developers, contractors, and other customers. They will be the primary contact at the front counter and phone to receive and respond to customers and handle inquiries in conformance with policies and procedures. This position will also apply valuations, determine permit costs, and assign permit numbers for new projects based on codes, regulations, and policies. Will be responsible for reviewing applications, collecting fees, and issuing permits for applications which require no plan review. They will exercise independent judgement and forward complicated matters as appropriate to the building inspectors, health & safety inspector, or other staff for additional follow-up.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills High school diploma is required along with a minimum of two (2) years general clerical and/or administrative support experience. Prior customer service with frequent interaction with the public and experience working in an Engineering/Building Department or municipal government setting are highly preferred.
The ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated. Must be familiar with building construction terminology and some understanding of federal, state, and village building, zoning, and subdivision codes and regulations. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational skills including attention to detail, problem solving, and follow through. Must be able to provide a positive customer service experience and handle difficult situations professionally.
