This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements under previous standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited)
- Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from an approved school
- Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in the U.S.
- Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification
- Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians and are not considered independent practitioners
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred Experience: 5 years clinical/procedural experience as a staff or attending Gastroenterologist, though graduating fellows are considered.
Physical Requirements: Sedentary work with some standing, bending, and carrying light items; ability to interact with staff and patients.
Duties include:
- Diagnose, treat, and manage gastrointestinal and liver disorders
- Perform histories, physical exams, endoscopy consultations, and develop treatment plans
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures
- Complete outpatient encounters and coding
- Oversee conscious sedation, evaluate consult requests, conduct telemedicine visits, and coordinate care
- Attend meetings, participate in committees, and complete CME and mandatory VA training
