Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the initial appointment requirements are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens only if recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited school
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
- Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification, in an accredited program
- Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work on an intermittent or fee basis, under supervision
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred: 5 years clinical/procedural experience as a Gastroenterologist or graduating fellows
- Physical ability to perform sedentary work with some standing, bending, and lifting

Duties
- Provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including GERD, Barrett's esophagus, dyspepsia, gut-brain axis disorders, IBD, pancreaticobiliary disease, anorectal disorders, alcoholic and non-alcoholic liver diseases, viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis
- Perform histories, physical exams, endoscopy consultations, develop treatment plans, and follow-ups
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including PEG placement and esophageal dilation
- Complete outpatient encounters with proper coding, handle e-consults, and oversee conscious sedation administration
- Evaluate and prioritize GI consult requests, conduct telemedicine visits, and coordinate care with VA and non-VA facilities
- Participate in staff meetings, committees, and process improvement teams
- Maintain competency through CME, complete mandatory VA training, and perform administrative tasks like peer reviews
