Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to reapply.

Qualifications

To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all criteria are fulfilled. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to meet the basic standards.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, in accordance with VA policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in the U.S., its territories, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty, leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: Board Eligible or Board Certified in Gastroenterology.
  • Preferred experience includes proficiency in GI endoscopy procedures such as EGD and colonoscopy.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Position is subject to meeting physical requirements, including heavy lifting, reaching, and visual and hearing standards. Environmental factors include working closely with others, working alone, and irregular hours.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, mentor, and teach graduates, including GI fellows and residents.
  • Manage diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic gastroenterological and endoscopic services.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies, including bleeding control, polypectomy, EMR, PEGS, and dilation.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals and provide consultations.
  • Possess basic endoscopic skills and engage in clinical/research activities.
  • Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
