Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending completion of training or licensing requirements, applicants may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled. VA-employed physicians who initially met the qualification standards are deemed qualified.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of practice in the U.S.
  • Enrolled residents in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) with limitations.
  • Proficiency in English, spoken and written.
  • Preferred: 5 years of clinical/procedural experience as a Gastroenterologist or graduating fellows.
  • Physical ability to perform sedentary work with some standing, bending, and carrying light items. Ability to interact professionally with staff and patients.

Duties

  • Provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and management of gastrointestinal and liver disorders, including GERD, Barrett's esophagus, dyspepsia, IBD, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and others.
  • Perform histories, physical exams, endoscopy consultations, and develop treatment plans.
  • Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including PEG placement and esophageal dilation.
  • Complete outpatient encounters, code visits correctly, and complete e-consults.
  • Oversee conscious sedation administration.
  • Evaluate and prioritize GI consults, conduct telemedicine visits, and coordinate care with VA and non-VA centers.
  • Participate in staff meetings, committees, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Maintain competency through CME, and complete mandatory VA training.
