Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited medical school.
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course was completed.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Note: VA physicians involved in academic training may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
  • Residency approval: by ACGME, AOA, or other programs deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs and meeting basic requirements may be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not have privileges; they perform certain duties under supervision.
  • Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible in orthopedic surgery.
  • Preferred Experience: 1-3 years of recent surgical experience.
  • Physical Requirements: Must meet physical standards, including a pre-placement physical exam, and be able to lift 15-44 pounds, push for about 2 hours, reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk and stand for 3-5 hours, kneel, and have depth perception and color discrimination. Hearing aids are permitted.

Duties

  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and remains open until July 15th, 2025.
  • The initial referral cutoff is May 22nd, 2025, with subsequent cut-offs every 2 weeks.
  • Applications received after the cutoff will be considered as vacancies arise.

  • The Orthopedic Surgeon will evaluate and treat musculoskeletal conditions, providing consultation and care in various settings including outpatient, inpatient, OR, and Emergency Department.
  • Major duties include administrative responsibilities, preventative medicine, emergency preparedness, supervision and training of residents and staff, and providing on-call services.
