Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval can provide an award amount up to $200,000, with an eligibility period of one to five years, determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be considered tentatively but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. VA physicians previously employed and meeting the qualification standards at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
  • Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • For residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs, appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) is possible, but they must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred experience in Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology with relevant clinical expertise.
  • Physical requirements include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and the ability to perform physical tasks such as walking, standing, and patient transfer.

Duties

  • This is an open continuous announcement until September 18, 2025, with initial application cut-off on August 1, 2025, and subsequent biweekly cut-offs.
  • Eligible applications received after the initial cut-off will be considered as vacancies arise.
  • Compensation includes a competitive salary, annual performance bonus, paid time off, retirement benefits, federal insurance options, licensure reimbursement, CME allowance, and malpractice coverage.
  • Provider will support Gastroenterology services across multiple VA sites, documenting clinical work in CPRS, participating in quality projects, and engaging in medical staff activities.
  • Major duties involve providing clinical care for general and subspecialty gastroenterology patients, including managing acute and chronic conditions, ordering tests, prescribing medications, and performing endoscopic procedures.
  • Emphasis on health risk assessment, prevention, chronic disease management, and team-based care, including telehealth services.
