Job Description The Department of Biological Sciences invites applications for a 12-month, full time, Undergraduate Programs Coordinator. The Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) is a community that advances understanding of the biological sciences through active discovery, learning, and engagement with society. Our vision is to inspire our students to wonder about the living world and strive to better understand it. To accomplish this, one of our strategic goals is to increase the number of degrees awarded from DBS programs by 25%, primarily through focusing on recruitment & retention initiatives and developing more effective relationships with other programs at ISU and beyond. The Undergraduate Programs Coordinator (UPC) will be responsible for coordinating aspects of undergraduate student services, including prospective student development and recruiting, freshman/sophomore advising and retention, coordination of student involvement activities (research internships, clubs, etc.), program assessment and development, and post?graduation tracking. The Department of Biological Sciences has 32 faculty members specializing in diverse sub-disciplines of the biological sciences. DBS serves 460 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate students enrolled in 12 distinct degree programs, along with hundreds of students enrolled in DBS courses offered in service to other departments and programs. Key Responsibilities The Undergraduate Programs Coordinator will help our prospective and current students achieve academic success. They will be the primary department contact for incoming freshmen and prospective students, and will create materials for recruitment and advising. They will also serve on the departmental undergraduate education committee and work with department faculty to enhance student success. Specific Duties: Undergraduate recruiting: tours, events, recruiting materials. (20%) Manage relationships with undergraduate students and faculty: retention, advising, research opportunities (on and off campus), and track alumni. (60%) Other duties: Departmental curriculum and scholarships committees, coordinating activities and efforts with other science departments and college-wide initiatives. (20%) Minimum Qualifications The Undergraduate Programs Coordinator will need to understand the undergraduate curriculum in the department and be able to advise students on which degree to choose and how to navigate the requirements of that degree. They will create recruiting and advising materials to help students. To accomplish this, they will need: Undergraduate degree in life sciences or other relevant field. Demonstrated success in working with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds. At least one (1) year of experience engaging with high school or college students in educational, advisory, support, outreach, or mentorship roles, including but not limited to college admissions, academic advising, student recruitment, counseling, or other educational focused programs or services. Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Preferred Qualifications The preferred candidates will also have: A graduate degree in the life sciences or other relevant field. Knowledge of recruitment strategies for limited-income and first-generation students. Experience working with STEM fields. Bilingual (English/Spanish).
