Job Description
General Summary:
Provides neuropsychological assessment, diagnostic, and treatment services to patients and their families. Provides consultation to Lurie Children’s medical services (e.g., Cardiology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery) regarding the neurocognitive status of their patients and its relationship to medical-neurological disease factors and treatment factors. Understands the growth, development, and cultural needs of neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients and integrates this into the delivery of care.
The position actively supports the Hospital’s and the Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement and customer service goals through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.
The position also adheres to the Hospital’s and the Department’s commitment to equitable access to care and to the neuropsychology community’s commitment to racial, cultural, and social justice.
Essential Job Functions
Conducts diagnostic evaluations using neuropsychological testing measures; interprets and communicates results. Designs protocols for monitoring the cognitive, socioemotional, and behavioral status of medical patient populations. Interfaces with outpatient clinic programs of Lurie Children’s medical services for the purpose of monitoring their patient populations. Maintains appropriate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record in a timely manner. Writes letters, notes, and formal clinical reports on patient contacts. Communicates progress over the telephone, via telemedicine, and via the electronic medical record as appropriate. Follows protocols and procedures of the Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Lurie Children’s Hospital. Participates in the APA-approved internship training program and training programs for psychology practicum students and fellows, the social work student training program, and the child and adolescent psychiatry and general psychiatry residency program by preparing and presenting seminar topics and providing supervision to psychology trainees. Collaborates and consults with medical providers, schools, and social service agencies as well as city, county, and state funding and placement agencies through oral and written presentation of clinical findings and recommendations. Completes all case management duties of assigned cases including discharge planning, completion of the diagnostic evaluation and referrals to appropriate support services as needed. Participates in rounds, patient care conferences, diagnostic and treatment staff team meetings, multidisciplinary case conferences, and discipline-specific team meetings. Engages in research related to pediatric neuropsychology and, when appropriate, in program evaluation. Scholarly activities and research related to the disorders encountered in their work or treatment approaches used in their clinical activities is strongly encouraged Assists in the training and supervision of psychometrists/neuropsychology technicians. Works with team members to provide appropriate coverage for scheduled absences. Maintains test equipment and supplies of the Neuropsychology service as state-of-the-art resources. Participates in continuing education events including hospital and department mandatory education courses and courses required to maintain professional certification/licensure requirements. Performs job functions adhering to customer service principles of innovation, service excellence, and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Minimum education required to perform job: a doctoral degree in clinical psychology with appropriate internship and a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology. If degree is in a related area (e.g., human development) must have completed APA-approved internship. Required licensure and/or certification: Must be licensed in the State of Illinois prior to start date. If employee is license-eligible, employee must obtain license and be granted clinical privileges before start date. Must be board certified or eligible for board certification in clinical neuropsychology through ABPP/ABCN. Trained in aspects of clinical and/or behavioral translational research. Ability to think proactively, act creatively, and take initiative appropriately. Excellent verbal and written communication, critical-thinking, and interpersonal skills. Documented track record of academic productivity/potential, including peer-reviewed publications and grant applications. Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a multidisciplinary team. Special physical requirements – sits and stands throughout the day. Physical management of patients in crisis situation may be necessary. Basic Life Support Certification required within sixty days of hire. Spanish language fluency is preferable.
