Senior Safety & Health Specialist . This position will oversee the environmental mitigation responsibilities for the SDOT Safety & Health team, in addition to supporting occupational safety and health initiatives generally. The person in this role must communicate and be team-oriented, must value both solution and process, and be able to work effectively in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse population. Coordinates SDOT hazardous waste collection and profiles. Coordinates and performs contaminated materials testing and disposal. Manages chemical inventories at multiple sites. Cooperates in spill response and prevention program management. Participates in SDOT environmental programs across disciplines. Implements facility and personnel emergency preparedness programs. Participates in emergency operations and Incident Management Team activations. Coordinates and develops safety training programs. Provides safety support to SDOT’s field operations teams through site audits, safety meetings and safety program delivery. Evaluates safety practices, investigates incidents, and makes recommendations based on DOSH & OSHA regulations, and other industry best practices. Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, Engineering or a related field. Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a safety or health-related field. OR : An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Desired Qualifications: Hazardous waste and contaminated soils management. Emergency preparedness training and coordination. Right-of-Way construction and maintenance industry practices. Administering & delivering training to diverse audiences. Understanding of DOSH and OSHA regulations. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). Microsoft Office Suite fluency. License, Certification and Other Requirements: Current Washington State driver's license. Work Environment/Physical Demands: Required to wear protective equipment, follow safety procedures, and exercise caution during inspections. Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies. Work is generally performed in an office environment but requires in-field work as well.
