Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%) Staff development (approximately 20%) Support to operations (approximately 10%) Lead the development and implementation of strategic growth plans for HDR’s Highway & Roads market sector in coordination with region leadership, area business group leadership, client managers and practice group leaders Serve as Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector Engage in projects as Principal‑In‑Charge on selected engagements Promote HDR services to clients within the market sector in collaboration with client managers Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team Work with Regional Business Group Directors on development and delivery of area goals and market sector initiatives Drive client development and pursuit processes with client managers and business development leaders Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities Engage in industry associations at a leadership level and model HDR’s culture in business and community organizations Identify investments (acquisitions and technology) to sustain HDR’s leadership position Develop relationships with industry counterparts and with senior leadership in key client organizations Lead HDR’s presence with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC regions Market Context
In the US, HDR has ongoing contracts with state departments of transportation as well as with towns, counties and cities. HDR is expanding to build similar contractual relationships in Canada, the UK, parts of the Middle East and Australia. HDR’s market sector professionals engage with clients to bring all HDR services including advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities and more. Role and Purpose
The Highway & Roads Market Sector Director supports area business development and client management while defining and implementing key initiatives for growth, coordinating best practices and quality professional services, and projecting the HDR brand in the marketplace. The role requires engaging a broad group of employees and developing HDR’s image across our clients and markets. Staff Development
Lead an organization that supports client service, wins new work, and provides opportunities for staff growth and development Support area leadership with identifying and recruiting prospective market sector personnel Coordinate staffing and recruiting plans for key hires and approve all key/strategic hires Participate in annual performance conversations for key market sector leaders Operations Support
Assist Regional Business Group Directors and area managers in delivering professional services for market sector projects Drive client management, monitor market sector profit and loss, review staff assignments, and encourage work sharing Support QA/QC and ensure project delivery Monitor performance indicators (P&L, unbilled revenue, AR, investments); manage workload and resources Facilitate development and dissemination of “lessons learned” Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a closely related field A minimum of 12 years of industry experience including leadership Strong written and verbal communication skills Strong skills in client management, client development, and growing/leading a practice Strong business skills including budgeting, staffing and operations Strong ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of HDR’s employee‑owned culture Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 20 years of experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design Professional engineering license or equivalent Past or current leadership positions within highway/road industry associations including AASHTO, IBTTA and other similar organizations globally What We Believe
