The City of San Diego is seeking a Wastewater Pretreatment Program Manager to administer the City's Wastewater Pretreatment Program. This role involves developing program policies, directing staff in inspecting and sampling industrial and commercial establishments, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. Salary: $125,340.80 - $151,985.60 annually Location: City of San Diego, CA Job Number: JR-T11956-202508 Business Area: 2000 - Public Utilities Opening Date: 08/29/2025 Closing Date: 9/15/2025 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time Minimum Requirements: Education: Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or a closely related field. Closely related degrees MUST include the completion of at least 18 semester/27 quarter college-level units of chemistry, including lecture and laboratory classes in both organic and general chemistry. Experience: Three years of full-time professional-level industrial waste inspection experience which includes conducting site evaluations and inspections, and applying federal pretreatment standards to a variety of categorically regulated industries generating waste discharged into the sewer system, which MUST include one year of full-time experience as a lead or supervisor over professional wastewater pretreatment inspection/enforcement staff, AND one of the following options: An additional one year of full-time industrial waste inspection experience which includes conducting site evaluations and inspections, and applying federal pretreatment standards to a variety of categorically regulated industries generating waste discharged into the sewer system. One year of full-time chemical, environmental, or sanitary engineering experience which includes the design or operation of wet industrial processes or sanitary/industrial wastewater treatment processes. One year of full-time chemical wastewater laboratory experience in an industrial waste program which includes the sampling and analysis of toxic pollutants. License: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire. Required Documents (MUST SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION): Proof of degree/transcripts, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements. Proof of transcripts showing completion of the required course work, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements. If you are successful in this initial screening process, your application will be reviewed for applicable education, experience, and/or training to ensure all minimum requirements have been met. Successful candidates will be placed on a list which will be used to fill position vacancies during the next six months (180 days). For each vacancy, only those candidates with the most appropriate qualifications will be contacted by the hiring department for an interview. Supplemental Information: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. Certain positions may require additional screening processes, including a polygraph examination and/or background investigation. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins. A positive test result for alcohol, cannabis/marijuana, illegal drugs, or inadequately explained prescription drugs, or misrepresentation, falsification, or omission of pertinent facts in any step of the screening or selection process, may be cause for disqualification or termination of employment.
