Oversees day to day operations of clinical or research laboratory(s): Directs the administrative functions and customer service in area(s) of responsibility. Coordinates technical functions with technical coordinators/supervisors, directors and other hospital departments. Develops policies/procedures, oversees training programs, administers budgets, recommends capital equipment purchases, and ensures department meets established laboratory and hospital objectives and complies with regulatory guidelines.
Keeps abreast of regulatory changes, ensures Quality Assurance and safety compliance with federal regulations and certifying agencies. Ensures preparation for inspections, maintenance of accurate records, procedure manuals, record storage and monitors results of proficiency testing.
Plans, prepares and monitors the capital equipment, operations and personnel budgets for the department. Regularly reviews year to date expenses and variances. Investigates and justifies variance and implements corrective actions.
Coordinates with other laboratory leadership in developing goals and objectives for the laboratory. Analyzes laboratory strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints to direct resources to accomplish objectives. Works with Laboratory Supervisors and Assistant Directors to develop succession plans. Reviews and updates job descriptions by reviewing job responsibilities and minimum qualifications on a regular basis. Effectively manages employee performance; addresses problems by listening to employees and providing employees with feedback, identifying ways to develop skills to perform their job effectively. Communicates job expectations to employees and ensures employee competency and timely performance evaluations/ documentation. Develops laboratory wide policies/procedures in accordance with the hospital/ university and regulatory agencies. Ensures that departmental productivity meets or exceeds standards for maximum operational efficiency. Monitors and re-directs activities or FTEs to maintain acceptable levels of productivity. Ensures orientation and continuing education activities are provided for employees which address employee safety, infection control, job training and leadership development.
Participates in education programs and professional organizations to maintain professional growth and provides department and staff with new information.
Evaluates and implements operational changes to improve the quality and efficiency of laboratory services. Coordinates quality issues with other hospital departments. Prepares reports identifying quality improvement and laboratory accomplishments.
Assists in preparing operational, statistical reports for regulatory agencies, productivity monitoring and benchmarking activities. Reviews reports to assist in making fact-based decisions. Oversees test fee schedule, coding and cost analysis. Coordinates test billing and cost analysis with laboratory information systems. Designs laboratory forms related to patient test requests and reports. Provides various managerial reports related to laboratory operations, finances, employee training/ competency, safety and infection control.
May serve on, or chair laboratory and hospital committees or clinical pathways. Makes decisions focused on customer service. Serves as liaison between laboratory and patients, physicians, nurses, staff and other institutions. Communicates frequently with other laboratory managers promoting teamwork. Communicates operational changes to technical supervisors/staff and other hospital departments. Seeks input and recommendations from staff on ways to improve operations. Meets with faculty, nursing, physicians and other customers regarding laboratory operations/service and education/research. Assists in providing approved resources for instrument evaluations and procedure development.
Investigates and recommends, with technical supervisors and directors, the purchase of new products and equipment. Develops criteria for vendor bids and recommends vendor selection.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical lab science or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of medical technology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency. Five years of medical technology experience of which four years in a supervisory capacity is preferred. Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP), CT(ASCP) or categorical (ASCP), MT(HEW), MT(HHS), MT(AMT), MT(NCA), CHT or CHS(ABHI).
5+ to 7 years experience Management Experience Required -Yes Minimum Education -Bachelor's Degree Willingness to Travel -Occasionally
