Markel . The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals profitably and according to authority levels and established guidelines. The role involves participating in special projects impacting the business, managing larger agents/brokers, utilizing underwriting tools for classification, rates, and premiums, and understanding state laws related to cancellation and non-renewal within the assigned territory. Knowledge of coverage forms and policy language is essential, along with assisting in resolving premium audit disputes and coaching others. Specifically, the role focuses on contributing to and implementing the strategic vision for EPL and W&H, supporting product profitability, growth, and retention of new and renewal business, and ensuring the effective execution of best practices. Building relationships with internal teams such as Actuarial, Product Development, Claims, IT, Operations, and Regulatory is crucial to deliver superior products to customers. Responsibilities include:
Underwriting EPL and W&H risks for a client base including Fortune 1000 and large professional service firms. Negotiating with brokers on program structure, premiums, retentions, and terms. Staying updated on economic and legal factors affecting the portfolio and industry. Analyzing coverage and contract language based on accepted policy forms. Managing book rates, aggregate exposure, and overall performance. Establishing underwriting guidelines and procedures. Leading client/underwriter meetings to assess risks and exposures. Developing and implementing new products. Cross-selling company products and services. Participating in industry events and broker roundtables to promote offerings. Meeting objectives related to quote/binder turnaround, policy issuance, renewal management, and documentation. Working extended hours and traveling as needed. Qualifications include:
Minimum 5 years of experience in underwriting, claims, or brokering for professional liability, with recent focus on EPL and W&H preferred. Four-year degree in business or related field from an accredited institution. Experience with industry policy forms and endorsements. Strong interpersonal, negotiation, analytical, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Additional details:
