The Assurance Experienced Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through the delegation of tasks throughout the planning, field work and “wrap-up” stages of an Audit client engagement. In this role, the Assurance Experienced Manager is charged with marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, as well as the responsibility of ensuring engagement profitability involving billings and collections. Traditionally responsibilities of the Assurance Experienced Manager will include advising the client on various economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS consistently within complex situations, writing technical consultation memos on GAAP / GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing various financial reporting control systems.

Job Duties

Control Environment: Applies knowledge and understanding of the collective effect of factors on establishing or enhancing effectiveness, or mitigating risks, of specific policies and procedures. Identifies and communicates recommendations to improve client internal controls and accounting procedures. Supervises the work of the audit team and reviews workpapers and conclusions, preferably onsite during field work. Provides on‑the‑job training to engagement staff.

GAAP: Applies knowledge of GAAP principles to client transactions, documents understanding and application, and consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements. Monitors professional pronouncements and drafts complex financial statements and related disclosures. Identifies complex accounting issues and documents resolutions, seeking counsel of technical experts as needed.

SEC and PCAOB: Applies knowledge of SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines, documents and communicates their application. Reviews SEC filings for form, content, completeness, and accuracy; ensures appropriate quarterly reviews and completeness of required client communications.

GAAS: Applies knowledge of professional standards and the use of GAAS in performing and supervising work. Provides guidance to others and communicates matters to the Audit Committee/Board as appropriate. Uses efficiency tools where applicable.

Methodology: Applies BDO standards to deliver quality services. Conducts detailed reviews to ensure audits align with assurance manual standards. Prepares or reviews communications to management/audit committees and helps plan the audit process with focus on quality and timeliness.

Research: Applies methodology to obtain information from authoritative sources, conducts timely research, prepares memos supporting conclusions, and presents issues effectively.

Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities

Oversees Associates and Senior Associates on all projects; reviews work and provides feedback.

Acts as a Career Advisor, manages workload, and provides coaching and on‑the‑job learning opportunities.

Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Bachelor’s degree required; Accounting/Finance/Economics/Statistics preferred. Master’s in Accounting preferred.

Six (6) or more years of prior relevant audit experience; prior supervisory experience required. Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialty preferred.

Active licensed US CPA or equivalent international qualification; if international, must obtain US CPA license within defined timeframe.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred.

Sound GAAP and GAAS knowledge; familiarity with SEC and PCAOB rules; strong verbal and written communication; strong people development and delegation skills; client development and relationship-building abilities; and ability to manage engagement profitability including billings and collections.
