BDO USA JOB DESCRIPTION The Assurance Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through the delegation of tasks throughout the planning, field work and “wrap-up” stages of an Audit client engagement. In this role, the Assurance Manager is charged with marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, as well as the responsibility of ensuring engagement profitability involving billings and collections. Traditionally responsibilities of the Assurance Manager will include advising the client on various economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, apply GAAP and GAAS consistently within complex situations, writing technical consultation memos on GAAP / GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing various financial reporting control systems.

Controls Environment: Applies knowledge to establish, enhance effectiveness, or mitigate risks of policies and procedures; validates and assesses internal control over financial reporting; identifies and communicates improvements to management and the audit committee; delegates audit functions appropriately; supervises the audit team and reviews work papers; provides on-the-job training to engagement staff.
GAAP: Applies understanding of GAAP/GAAS; identifies and discusses the impact of new accounting pronouncements; monitors professional and industry pronouncements; presents and discusses alternatives; drafts complex financial statements and disclosures; documents resolution of complex accounting issues.
SEC and PCAOB: Applies SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines; reviews filings for form, content, completeness, and accuracy; ensures quarterly reviews and communications to the client and Audit Committee are complete and compliant; ensures Section 404 internal control work complies with guidelines.
GAAS: Applies professional standards on engagements; provides guidance to others; communicates matters to the Audit Committee/Board; utilizes efficiency tools where appropriate.
Methodology: Applies BDO standards; conducts detailed reviews for assurance manual compliance; prepares communications to management and audit committees; plans audit process and oversees execution with quality and timeliness; follows archiving procedures; considers Sarbanes-Oxley requirements for combined 404 and financial statement audits for public clients.
Research: Uses authoritative sources to inform conclusions; conducts timely research; prepares memos and consults with others as appropriate; presents issues effectively.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises Associates and Senior Associates; reviews work; acts as Career Advisor; manages workload; provides feedback; coaches staff for on-the-job learning.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred
Master’s degree in Accountancy preferred
Five (5) or more years of prior relevant audit experience required; prior supervisory experience required; industry expertise in one or more assurance specialty preferred
Active licensed US CPA required; recognized active international equivalent or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy; if international equivalent, must obtain active US CPA license within defined timeframe
Software and Tools
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Solid GAAP and GAAS knowledge; familiarity with SEC and PCAOB rules
Strong verbal and written communication; excellent people development and delegation skills; client development/relationship-building skills
Executive presence to be primary client contact; ability to prepare and present to clients and potential clients
Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities; responsibility for engagement profitability including billings and collections
