In collaboration with the governing board, CEO of the hospitals, and HPI’s executive leadership team, the CEO of HPI is responsible for directing, coordinating, and controlling all aspects of the operating functions, processes, and staff of the MSO and surgical hospitals while ensuring surgical services exceed customer expectations and improve clinical and financial operations. Functional Expectations & Requirements
The CEO of HPI directs and coordinates all operating functions, processes, and staff of the MSO and surgical hospitals. The CEO of the three hospitals and the HPI executive leadership team report directly to the CEO of HPI. Responsibilities
Executive oversight for the strategic direction of the hospital facilities and MSO. Serve as liaison between the Governing Board, Medical Staff, and all departments of the MSO and facilities. Report pertinent activities concerning the MSO and facilities to the Governing Board at regular intervals. Appoint a person responsible for the MSO and facilities in the absence of the CEO. Plan for the services provided by the MSO and the facilities and the operation of the MSO and the facilities. Overall management of the Partnership as outlined in the Operating or Limited Partnership Agreement as applicable. Lead discussion/presentation during Monthly Operations Review calls with USPI’s Home Office Business Operations team. Deploy, monitor, and ensure that USPI’s EDGETM is integrated within the facility’s operational processes and QPI program. Ensure compliance with USPI’s policies and procedures related to internal controls. Develop, monitor, and control staffing, operating budgets, and capital budgets. Develop, monitor, and control the purchasing plan to stay within budget and comply with group purchasing initiatives. Ensure compliance with government regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Negotiate and manage external contracts with physicians, ancillary services, plant maintenance, and purchasing agreements. Establish pricing for procedures based on cost analysis and local market standards. Foster positive work relationships among all departments and act as liaison between USPI Home Office and facility staff. Develop and ensure compliance with departmental policy and procedure manuals for staff. Closely monitor variations in financial performance to avoid cash flow problems. Personnel Administration
Hold monthly staff meetings outlining goals and priorities of the facilities. Manage exempt and non-exempt employees in accordance with facility policies. Review employee performance and conduct disciplinary actions as needed. Evaluate management performance and other staff as designated. Approve additions or deletions of positions and candidates for employment. Develop productivity analysis and ensure staffing efficiency relative to surgical case volume. Implement orientation, training, and ongoing evaluation for all employees. Manage employee files and records; provide opportunities for professional development. Promote positive customer relations by employees and physicians. Clinical Services
Ensure clinical services comply with regulatory and accrediting standards. Collaborate with the Medical Director and Medical Executive Committee on evaluating and developing surgical services. Manage nursing, central supply, medical records, housekeeping, and contracted services (laboratory, radiology, pharmaceuticals, laundry, biomedical engineering). Monitor surgical and patient care equipment and follow up on repairs. Marketing, Quality & Planning
Develop and implement a sales/marketing plan and lead the facility’s sales team per USPI plans. Identify and develop new services appropriate for surgical hospitals. Foster positive public relations. Develop, evaluate, and promote continuous quality improvement programs; administer infection control and quality reviews; identify and correct quality issues; develop indicators for evaluating operations and care; participate in the Quality Improvement Committee. Medical Staff Relationships
Credentialing of practitioners; collaborate with Medical Director on bylaws and regulations; act as liaison in problem areas with the medical staff. Promote positive relationships between employees and practitioners; define service needs and efficiencies. Physical Facilities
Ensure facilities are clean, professional, well maintained, and convey confidence to patients and physician customers. Identify and approve plant improvements and repairs; promote a safe and aesthetically appealing physical plant. Maintain records and report incidents related to generators, utilities, security, environment, and preparedness drills. Administrative Representation & Professionalism
Attend corporate administrative meetings representing the facilities. Act in accordance with the facilities’ and USPI’s vision and philosophy; stay current on healthcare changes and act in the corporation’s best interest. Maintain membership in relevant professional associations. Stay informed about reimbursement, legislative issues and business law as applicable. Personal Development & Professionalism
Identify areas for development; participate in mandatory trainings and in-services; adhere to USPI conduct and dress code; maintain privacy and confidentiality; communicate effectively with stakeholders. Required Skills
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; master’s degree strongly preferred. Hospital (with emphasis on Surgical Division) or Surgical Hospital experience. 10–15 years of progressive healthcare management experience, capable of leading a complex entity in a diverse urban environment; strong command of English. Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others. The Governing Board may determine other qualifications as deemed fit. USPI complies with federal, state, and local vaccination laws. If offered the position and vaccination is required, candidate must provide proof of vaccination or obtain an exemption and may be subject to regular testing as allowed by law.
