Overview
Engineer-In-Training III (Bridge Inspector) - Denver with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). This position provides entry level engineering on-the-job training performing inspections statewide to evaluate bridges and document conditions, with guidance from higher level engineers. It includes learning to determine appropriate actions based on inspection findings and potentially closing unsafe bridges or initiating repairs and maintenance. Responsibilities
Bridge Inspection: under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer, conduct inspections, observe traffic control, and inspect bridge components for defects, erosion, fatigue, deterioration, or accidental damage; learn to determine condition states for bridge elements; estimate quantities for each condition state; evaluate adequacy of bridge openings for water and traffic; apply proper tools and safety procedures. Determine and recommend actions based on inspection findings (e.g., closing unsafe bridges, repairs, or maintenance) under PE guidance; learn to inspect common structure designs and configurations (redundant multi-span, continuous, simple span slab and girder bridges). Post-Inspection Documentation: document findings with photos, reports, sketches, tally sheets, reference points; measure clearances and update databases; identify problems and recommend reports and maintenance to maximize bridge longevity and public safety. Develop Policies and Procedures: assist in developing guidance for inspectors and provide one-on-one or classroom training on policies/procedures. Inspection Preparation: plan inspections, organize structure folders, determine inspection sequence, prepare for special inspections (fractural critical, NDT, underwater), manage traffic control implications, and review plans and bridge files. Bridge Inspection using Below Bridge Access Vehicle (BBAV): perform element and NBI inspections requiring BBAV, maintain a CDL-B to operate BBAV, and work under PE guidance. Work Environment: typical hours 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday–Friday; travel statewide (~33 nights per year); 55% field, 45% office; must obtain CDL Class B within 12 months; ability to lift 50–100 lbs. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. Substitutions: current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern with the Colorado State Board can substitute for the degree. If using education to qualify, submit official or unofficial transcripts or an official foreign credential evaluation (NACES) with the application. Conditions of Employment
Must pass pre-employment screenings (various checks as described). A current valid driver’s license is required for positions requiring vehicle operation. Obtain a CDL Class B within 12 months of hire. CDOT requires registration as a Professional Engineer within eight years of appointment for this class. Preferred Qualifications
Experience as an Engineer/Bridge Inspector with a track record of duties listed in Description of Job. State service experience related to duties; strong ethics, adaptability, initiative, and problem-solving; ability to work with diverse stakeholders; strong communication and analytical skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office and related software; active CDL Class B in good standing.
