Overview
At the start of each shift the Barista is responsible for counting and setting up the cash register drawer following the DCH Cash Handling Policy. The Barista handles the day-to-day operations of the Starbucks coffee kiosk, prepares beverages to order according to customer preferences and Starbucks formulas, and stocks/rotates items sold in the kiosk (drinks, sandwiches, desserts, cups, straws, merchandise, etc.). They enter all sales into the POS system and provide a printed receipt to customers. The role also includes maintaining a clean, sanitized, and organized work station to meet Health Department, Ever Clean, and TJC inspection standards, tracking inventory and placing orders as needed, and counting cash and receipts after each shift per DCH Internal Audit policies. Additional duties include restocking, serving food, cleaning/sanitizing equipment, and general cleaning of service and dining areas, depending on campus. Strong multitasking and communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
- Staffing is currently Monday–Friday; schedule may change based on hospital or department needs.
- Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards, creating positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, and customers.
- Assist manager/supervisor at shift start by counting all monies and verifying cash handling accuracy; sign off on cash drawer accuracy.
- Enter all customer transactions into the CBORD (POS) system, collect payment, provide receipts, and ensure cash/records are secured.
- Maintain cleanliness of the work area and assist with cleaning dining/servery areas.
- Restock items in cafeteria to meet customer needs (Northport Campus as applicable).
- Assist cafeteria cashier during Starbucks open hours by entering overflow transactions to prevent lines (Northport Campus as applicable).
- Post and keep Starbucks signage current; manage supplies for new, special, or seasonal beverages/promotions and know how to prepare them.
- Count cash and receipts at end of shift with a supervisor and complete logs/forms per internal audit policies.
- Other duties as assigned to support barista/service operations.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred; must be able to read, write, count, and comprehend English; follow detailed instructions.
- Minimum of one verifiable year of cashier experience preferred; prior barista or coffee shop experience is also preferred.
- Ability to count money, make change, follow recipes, and operate a multi-facetted POS system; strong customer service and communication skills required.
- ServSafe certification with a minimum score of 75% is preferred but not required.

- Physical requirements: medium work; ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly; normal or corrected hearing/vision; on-site presence required.
