We are seeking a dynamic and strategic Controller to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nonprofit finance professional or an Assistant Controller ready to step into a leadership role, to bring their skills to a purpose-driven organization.
Position Summary
The Controller will lead the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP, federal and state regulations, and nonprofit best practices. This role is pivotal in helping scale our financial infrastructure during a period of growth and innovation.
Responsibilities • Accounting & Financial Reporting
o Oversee all general ledger activity and ensure timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
o Prepare internal and external financial statements, grant reports, and audit schedules.
o Ensure accuracy and transparency in financial data presented to leadership and the Board. • Internal Controls & Compliance
o Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
o Ensure compliance with GAAP and federal/state regulatory requirements (including 990 reporting).
o Support the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors and managing deliverables. • Grants & Restricted Funds
o Monitor grant expenditures and ensure proper fund tracking, reporting, and compliance.
o Collaborate with program and development teams on budget alignment and grant budgeting. • Team Leadership & Development
o Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and professional development opportunities.
o Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented culture within the finance team. • Strategic Financial Support
o Partner with the CFO on forecasting, budgeting, and financial analysis.
o Contribute to the design of scalable systems and processes to support future growth.
Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or Master's preferred. • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment. • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting (including fund accounting), and compliance. • Experience with accounting systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud, etc.). • Proven ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines with accuracy. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to translate finance to non-finance audiences. • Commitment to the mission and values of our organization.
