Salary: $69,024 - $101,964 Annually Location: Denver Metro, CO Job Type: Full Time This position is open only to Colorado state residents. This position is a hybrid position. The purpose of the Electronic and Disease Reporting (EDR) Branch is to collect, integrate, and use communicable disease and environmental health information to benefit public health. The syndromic surveillance program crafts and validates syndromes for various public health hazards and conducts signal evaluation processes to support public health incidents and identifies different syndromic surveillance analysis methods to support different surveillance and response needs. The program translates data into recommendations and public health actions. Syndromic surveillance is an early warning system for public health problems that utilizes emergent and urgent care data to rapidly detect clusters of symptoms and health complaints that might indicate an increase of a certain condition. The syndromic surveillance data analyst plans for and manages on-going syndromic surveillance to monitor conditions of public health concern, including drug overdose information. Responsibilities of the position include but not limited to: Monitors syndromic surveillance data by using the Electronic Surveillance System for the Early Notification of Community-based Epidemics (ESSENCE), and analytical software such as SAS or R. Responsible for identifying issues and concerns about the data received from participating hospitals and jurisdictions and analyzes the impact on epidemiology and general public health resources for response and further investigate public health concerns. Data quality assurance efforts are conducted by analyzing timeliness, completeness, and validity of data using analytical software packages such as SAS or R. Evaluates syndromic surveillance definitions and analyses to ensure the validity and quality of daily syndromic analyses by reviewing patient level information in the system. Automates and streamlines data processing by using analytical software packages such as SAS or R. Conducts signal evaluation and creates response protocols related to syndromic surveillance activities. Participates in various external/internal workgroups related to syndromic surveillance program activities and responsibilities including meeting with partners from local, state, and federal groups. Provides technical expertise to syndromic surveillance partners and provide trainings related to importing, analyzing, and displaying syndromic surveillance data in SAS or R studio for both internal and external syndromic surveillance partners/key stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications: Six (6) years of relevant experience in public health, disease reporting, epidemiology, healthcare data management, healthcare data analysis, data manipulation, or other closely related experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position. A combination of related education from an accredited institution in Statistics, Biostatistics, Information Management, Health Information Management, Data Analysis/Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a field of study closely related to the work assignment. Preferred Qualifications: Relevant experience with the State of Colorado. Analysis experience with population level surveillance data systems. Experience working with drug overdose surveillance data. Experience analyzing large datasets using R/RStudio, SAS, SQL or other statistical programs. Ability to summarize and present data in order to best communicate findings including the ability to write conclusions and recommendations based on identifying and interpreting statistically significant trends. Experience with data visualization using Tableau or R Shiny software. Strong abilities in verbal and written communication to explain the complexities of data and results of analyses to a variety of audiences. Conditions of Employment: Pursuant to CDPHE policy, a background check is required for all positions at CDPHE. This is a term-limited position. Funding cannot be guaranteed beyond 08/31/2028. The incumbent in this position must be willing and able to resign on this date or when funds run out, whichever comes first. Critical Status: Must be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
