Overview

The purpose of this classification is to implement, and maintain Information Technology solutions for the City of Albany and Dougherty County governments. Assists staff and users to identify and solve hardware, software, communications, and operating procedure problems by telephone or in person.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze technical requirements of customers desiring to utilize hardware, software, and communication equipment to perform installation and maintenance duties.
  • Identify areas of operation which need upgraded hardware, software, or communications equipment.
  • Enter commands, observe system functioning, and review and analyze computer printouts and performance indications to verify correct operations and detect errors.
  • Install, adjust, calibrate, and perform minor repairs to hardware, software, and communication equipment, using hand tools and technical documents, following design or installation specifications.
  • Test faulty equipment using test equipment and knowledge of functional operation of computer, network, and communication systems to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Inspect components of equipment for defects and accuracy of assembly and installation; notify supervisor of errors or equipment stoppage; operate equipment to demonstrate use and analyze malfunctions.
  • Reference technical manuals and online help; attend seminars and training as needed; maintain awareness of new hardware, software, and techniques.
  • Maintain effective communication with vendors regarding hardware, software, and communication equipment.
  • Refer major hardware, software, and communications equipment problems or defective products to vendors or technicians for service.
  • Maintain a record of daily data communication transactions, problems and remedial actions taken, and installation activities.
  • Ascend poles to install or maintain auxiliary equipment and appliances according to diagrams.

Additional Functions

  • Performs on-call and after-hours support duties on a rotating basis.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Associate's degree in Information Systems or closely related field preferred; additionally, two (2) years of previous experience and/or training that includes PC-based programming and computer operations required; Bachelor's degree and additional certifications and training will be required and ongoing; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.

  • Data Utilization: ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information; discretion in determining data classification and referencing analysis to established standards.
  • Human Interaction: ability to apply principles of persuasion and/or influence over others in coordinating activities of a project, program, or designated area of responsibility.
  • Equipment, Machinery Tools, and Materials Utilization: ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, adhering to standards and specifications; ability to operate and control related equipment.
  • Verbal Aptitude: ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and/or design data and information.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculations; interpret decimals and percentages; may involve fractions or graphs.
  • Functional Reasoning: ability to apply principles of influence systems and exercise independent judgment to develop approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Situational Reasoning: ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against subjective criteria.

ADA Compliance

  • Physical Ability: tasks may involve very moderate physical effort, including some lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Sensory Requirements: ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues; some tasks require oral communication ability.
  • Environmental Factors: possible exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, extreme temperatures, fumes, noise, and occasional machinery or traffic hazards.
