Under the clinical supervision of the Director of Social Work, utilizes clinical social work techniques and theory to provide consultation, assessment, treatment interventions, and advocacy for a diverse population of patients and their families. Utilizes a biopsychosocial approach to healthcare, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to provide case management and crisis intervention for complex social factors and health determinants within the Psychiatry department.
Job Relationships
- The MSW Social Worker reports to and is accountable to the Director of Social Work.
- Collaborates with all staff on units for patient care, quality management, committees, and focus groups.
- Serves in a consultative role to staff for patient care.
Authority
Provides social work services on units, assisting patients and families with plans and decisions before, during, and after hospitalization. Supervises and trains graduate social work students when indicated and approved by the Director of Social Work.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Provides superior customer service to clients, customers, and patients as per Service Excellence Standards.
- Provides individual and/or group counseling/therapy, supports patient advocacy, and conducts diagnostic evaluations and assessments.
- Develops treatment and discharge plans, provides referrals, and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams.
- Facilitates continuing care, provides crisis prevention, and supervises other social workers and students.
- Offers counseling for patients and families regarding diagnosis, adjustment, and emotional impact.
- Maintains continuity of support throughout illness, supports bereavement counseling, and manages case resources and referrals.
- Documents social work activities timely in patient records.
- Participates in staff in-service, leads or co-leads support groups, and engages with community organizations.
- Performs psychosocial assessments of high-risk patients, prioritizing problems within limited time.
- Provides services to patients with histories of mental illness, abuse, domestic violence, and substance abuse, including follow-up through pregnancies.
- Assesses discharge needs of patients.
Reporting and Accountability
Reports to the Department Director, works closely with the Patient Care Director, and maintains confidentiality and security of all patient and staff data. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
Position Requirements
- Master's Degree (MSW) from an accredited School of Social Work required prior to employment.
- Must sit for and obtain Massachusetts LCSW Certification within 6 months of hire.
- One to two years of related experience preferred; pre-MS-W experience considered.
- Knowledge of community resources, strong interpersonal skills, comfort in a fast-paced environment, and cultural sensitivity are essential.
- Computer literacy required (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, web browsers).
