Key Responsibilities: Assess students orientation and mobility needs and develop tailored instructional plans Teach students travel skills both indoors and outdoors, utilizing tools such as white canes and electronic travel aids Collaborate with teachers, families, and other specialists to integrate mobility goals into overall educational plans Monitor and document student progress, adapting strategies as necessary Conduct training and provide resources to school staff and families to support student independence Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices and technology in orientation and mobility Qualifications: Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent) Experience working with K-12 students with visual impairments Strong assessment and individualized instruction skills Excellent communication and collaboration capabilities Familiarity with current assistive technology related to visual impairments Location: Position based in Elgin, Illinois within a K-12 school setting Benefits: Opportunity to make a significant impact on students independence and quality of life Collaborative work environment with dedicated education professionals Contract position with defined school year duration This role is ideal for professionals committed to supporting visually impaired students in developing essential orientation and mobility skills within an educational setting.
