Position Purpose
The Surgical Technologist position provides patient care of a technical nature. The technologist is responsible for supplying the operating room with the proper equipment and instrumentation needed for specific surgeries. During procedures, the primary responsibilities include maintaining the sterility of the surgical field, anticipating the needs of surgeons, and passing instruments in a timely fashion. Under direct supervision, duties may include, but are not limited to: sponge or suction, hold retractors or instruments, apply electrocautery, irrigate the operative site, cut suture material, connect drains to suction, and apply wound dressings. After procedures, the technologist cares for instrumentation and equipment and prepares for the next case.

If the candidate is not a certified Surgical Technologist, they must successfully complete a trainee position with provided training and education to learn the necessary skills. This position also assists in expediting room turnover to provide optimal service to surgeons, patients, anesthesiologists, and co-workers. Nature and Scope This role serves adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations. It involves developing technical skills as part of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. The position demands adaptability due to rapid changes in medical procedures, technology, equipment, policies, and surgeon preferences. The technologist must identify and address aseptic technique breakdowns, ensure equipment functionality before and after surgeries, and report issues promptly. The trainee works under a preceptor to develop skills and pass milestones; this training period does not exceed 12 months from the start date. Flexible hours and overtime may be required. Performs scrub duties to facilitate surgical procedures. Provides age-appropriate care considering physical, motor, sensory, psychosocial, and safety factors. This role involves patient care. Must have working knowledge of English; complete prerequisite classes in Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, and Microbiology before training begins. Must complete a formal technologist or hospital-based training program. Experience:
Previous hospital experience preferred; one year as a Technologist preferred. Licenses & Certifications:
None required; current BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required. If uncertified, must complete at least 15 hours of continuing education annually after the first year. Certified technologists must maintain qualifications to retain certification. Surgical First Assistant:
May perform as a first assistant if trained and certified according to relevant standards. Computer Skills:
Must acquire necessary computer skills within 90 days for online learning, forms, policies, and benefits enrollment.
