Overview This position provides patient care of a technical nature under supervision of a licensed nurse. Incumbent performs multiple functions as a Surgical Technologist and performs clerical duties to support in the day-to-day operations of OB Services Department. When available the individual will assist with deliveries. Under direct supervision, the Technologist may assist the L&D nurse and OB physician during delivery by setting up the delivery instrument table using aseptic technique, positioning the patient for pushing and delivery, holding retractors or instruments, obtaining extra needed supplies, and filling out baby bands.
Responsibilities
Supply Labor and Delivery Surgical Suite with the proper supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for specific surgical procedures.
Maintain sterility of the surgical field and anticipate the needs of the surgeons; assist with procedures such as C/Sections, hysterectomies, and similar operations.
Pass instruments in a timely fashion; perform duties such as sponge or suction, hold retractors or instruments as directed, and apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders.
Care for instrumentation and equipment and prepare for following cases; assist with room turnover to support efficient operations.
Supply Labor and Delivery PACU, LDRs, Antepartum rooms, and LDA with proper supplies and instrumentation; assist with deliveries when available.
Assist with cleaning, repositioning of patient, and restocking of the room; pre-process instrumentation and equipment requiring sterilization or high-level disinfection.
Perform clerical duties such as unit receptionist tasks, coordinating with Charge Nurse, computer and telephone use, entering patient charges, and scheduling diagnostic testing as requested by physicians.
Provide assistance to L&D Nurse and OB Physician during delivery as needed, including setting up instruments and assisting with patient positioning.
Rotate work areas and duties as needed and/or directed; flexibility with hours, call, and overtime may be required.
Nature and Scope This position serves Neonate, Adolescent, and Adult patient populations. The incumbent provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with OB/OR Supervisors, L&D Nurses, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, NICU Nurses, and other OB Services staff in the L&D operating rooms and LDRs. The role requires the ability to adapt to dynamic procedures, equipment, and surgeon preferences, and to identify and address aseptic technique issues.
The incumbent ensures equipment is functioning properly before procedures, maintains and reports on equipment condition, and supports documentation of patient care from pre-admission through discharge. Interdisciplinary communication and the ability to work under pressure are essential.
Other duties, flexible hours, call and overtime may be requested. This position has the freedom to rotate duties as needed and/or directed. The role provides patient care support.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Working-level knowledge of English (reading, writing, speaking). Formal technologist school program or hospital-based training preferred. If no formal training, prerequisite classes in Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Medical Terminology, and Microbiology prior to start date are required.
Experience:
Previous hospital experience preferred. 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
License(s):
None
Certification(s):
Current BLS certification by the American Heart Association required. Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred. If uncertified, must complete at least 15 hours of continuing education within the first year and annually thereafter. If certified, maintain minimum qualifications to keep certification.
Computer / Typing:
Must possess, or obtain within 90 days, computer skills to complete online learning requirements and access online forms, policies, benefits enrollment, etc.
