Remote Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher
to support students across New Mexico. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the education of students with hearing impairments in a flexible, supportive, and remote environment. Job Summary: The Remote Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teacher will be responsible for providing specialized instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This role requires expertise in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other communication methods tailored to individual student needs. You will create an inclusive virtual learning environment, deliver tailored lessons, assess student progress, and work closely with families, school staff, and administrators to ensure students' educational needs are met. Key Responsibilities: Instructional Delivery:
Develop and deliver virtual lessons that are accessible and engaging for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, using strategies such as American Sign Language (ASL), visual aids, and other accommodations to meet the needs of individual students.
Individualized Education Programs (IEPs):
Collaborate with parents, administrators, and other educators to develop, implement, and monitor IEPs for each student, ensuring that instructional methods and goals align with state standards and students' specific needs.
Student Progress Monitoring:
Regularly assess student progress and provide detailed feedback on academic and social growth. Adjust teaching strategies and accommodations as needed to support student success.
Communication and Collaboration:
Maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and other members of the educational team. Provide guidance to families on strategies for reinforcing learning at home.
Support and Advocacy:
Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes self-advocacy, independence, and confidence for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Behavioral and Emotional Support:
Provide social-emotional learning support in virtual settings, helping students develop effective communication, coping strategies, and interpersonal skills.
Technology Integration:
Utilize technology tools and platforms to enhance learning experiences and ensure accessibility for students with hearing impairments (e.g., captioning, visual support tools).
Documentation:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, IEP updates, and communication with families in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Professional Development:
Engage in ongoing training to stay current with best practices, trends, and new technologies in the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field (Masters preferred).
New Mexico Teaching Certification in Deaf Education.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other communication methods for students with hearing impairments.
Experience teaching deaf and hard of hearing students, preferably in a virtual setting.
Knowledge of New Mexico state standards and special education regulations for students with hearing impairments.
Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
Experience using online teaching tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Classroom, educational apps) and adaptive technology for accessibility.
Ability to work independently, manage a remote classroom, and be adaptable to the needs of diverse learners.
Passion for creating an inclusive and supportive educational environment for students with hearing impairments.
Preferred Skills & Experience: Experience working with students who use a variety of communication methods (e.g., ASL, oral/aural language, Total Communication).
Knowledge of assistive technologies such as captioning, speech-to-text, or video relay services.
Familiarity with New Mexico's special education laws and services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Spanish language skills (a plus, but not required).
