Overview Chief Executive Officer, NIH Clinical Center The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (CC) seeks applications for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The NIH Clinical Center is the nation’s largest hospital devoted exclusively to clinical research. The CEO will ensure the highest standards of quality and ethical behavior while advancing the Clinical Center’s potential to improve care and cure of complex diseases. Approximately 1,500 clinical research studies are in progress at the Clinical Center. About half study disease pathogenesis, including rare diseases. Since opening in 1953, over 400,000 volunteers have participated in studies here. Each year, the Clinical Center sees approximately 10,000 new research participants.

Responsibilities The CEO will: Develop all hospital operations policies, including those related to patient care, safety, and quality improvement. Analyze operations to identify efficiencies and develop plans to resolve operational problems or issues. Ensure the Clinical Center meets or exceeds accreditation and licensure standards from the Joint Commission, Medicare/Medicaid, state licensure, regulators, and related bodies; comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Oversee approval of specifications for all hospital construction and facility renovation and upgrading activities. Represent the Clinical Center internally to NIH and externally to patients, the Clinical Center Hospital Board, government officials, academic and research partners, and professional and advocacy groups. Collaborate with the CC Governing Board, Institute and Center Directors, and NIH leadership to develop and update short-term and long-term strategic plans. Build cross-functional relationships within NIH and with other Institutes and Centers to achieve shared goals; manage an approximately 1,900-employee workforce; develop the annual budget (approximately $699.5M in FY25) in collaboration with CCGB and NIH leaders; obtain NIH Director approval for the budget.

Additional Responsibilities

Ensure adherence to the highest ethical standards for healthcare. Provide vision to achieve operational and clinical excellence. Stay current with industry conditions and their impact on policies and operations. Lead an outstanding senior leadership team. Plan, exercise, and document disaster and emergency preparedness. Review and approve financial reports, budgets, managed care contracts, major expenditures; set charges for services. Drive modernization, efficiency, and financial stewardship initiatives. Foster accountability and collaboration among Clinical Center stakeholders. Analyze operating results relative to objectives and take corrective actions as needed.

Qualifications The NIH seeks candidates committed to scientific excellence with energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking to lead a dynamic organization. Requirements include: Advanced degree related to NIH mission (MD, PhD, RN; or master’s degrees such as MHA, MBA, MMM). Extensive experience in clinical research or health science with senior-level executive experience in healthcare administration or medical management. Strong interpersonal skills, leadership in clinical research, and evidence of managerial, administrative, mentoring, and strategic thinking abilities. Significant experience involving patient care, knowledge of managed healthcare systems, medical quality assurance, quality improvement, and risk management. Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate new programs; develop plans to resolve operational problems; manage finances and human resources; and serve as a spokesperson to legislators, media, scientific organizations, and advocacy groups. National and international recognition in their profession. Desirable: minimum 10 years of direct patient care experience. Demonstrable track record of leading a workforce with varied training levels and leading by example. Additional preferences: deep appreciation of clinical research in NIH mission; self-assurance and results-oriented approach; ability to assess and meet business needs. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a secret security clearance. This position is a Testing Designated Position requiring random urine drug testing.

Benefits The CEO, CC will be appointed at a salary commensurate with qualifications and NIH guidelines.
