Overview

Chief Executive Officer, NIH Clinical Center The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking applications for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Clinical Center (CC). The NIH Clinical Center is the nation’s largest hospital devoted exclusively to clinical research. The CEO will exercise authority in this context, ensuring the highest standards of quality and ethical behavior while advancing the Clinical Center’s potential to improve care and cure of complex diseases. Approximately 1,500 clinical research studies are in progress at the Clinical Center. Half study disease pathogenesis, including rare diseases not studied elsewhere. More than 400,000 volunteers have participated in clinical research since 1953, and about 10,000 new participants are seen each year. Responsibilities

The CEO will be responsible for ensuring research is conducted to the highest standards of quality and ethics. Key duties include: Develop and oversee hospital operations policies related to patient care, safety, and quality improvement Analyze operations to identify efficiencies and resolve operational problems Ensure the Clinical Center meets or exceeds accreditation and licensure standards (Joint Commission, Medicare/Medicaid, state licensure, regulatory agencies) Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations Oversee and approve specifications for hospital construction, renovation, and upgrading Represent the Clinical Center internally and externally to patients, boards, government officials, academic and research institutions, and professional groups Collaborate with the Clinical Center Governing Board, Institute and Center Directors, and NIH leadership to develop and update short-term and long-term strategic plans Build and leverage cross-functional relationships within NIH and with other Institutes and Centers to achieve shared goals Manage budget development (estimated at $699.5M in FY25) in collaboration with the Governing Board and Directors; obtain NIH Director approval Provide leadership for modernization, efficiency, and financial stewardship Foster accountability and collaboration across contributors to the Clinical Center Analyze operating results and take corrective actions as needed Qualifications

The NIH seeks candidates with a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking to lead a dynamic organization. Requirements include: Advanced degree related to the NIH mission (M.D., Ph.D., R.N., or master’s degrees such as MHA, MBA, MMM) Extensive experience in clinical research or health-science management plus senior-level executive experience in healthcare administration Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership, mentoring, strategic thinking, and ability to manage resources Significant experience in patient care, managed healthcare systems, quality assurance, quality improvement, and risk management Ability to design, implement, and evaluate new programs and resolve operational problems; experience as a spokesperson to legislators, media, and professional groups Recognized within the profession for scientific or administrative excellence; minimum 10 years in direct patient care is desirable Track record of leading a workforce at multiple training levels and leading by example Deep appreciation for the importance of clinical research in NIH’s mission Self-assurance and a results-oriented approach; ability to assess and meet business needs This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance. It is a Testing Designated Position requiring random drug testing. Benefits

The CEO will be appointed at a salary commensurate with qualifications and NIH guidelines. Full Federal benefits include retirement, health and life insurance, leave, and a retirement savings plan (401(k) equivalent).
