Overview

The UPS Technician maintains all UPS and Battery work onsite. They ensure maintenance is completed safely, on schedule, and within the equipment manufacturer’s recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect power electronic systems and their associated controls, including UPS systems, static transfer switches, and related components. Conduct inspections such as initial, in-process, visual condition, final, maintenance operational checks, and failure analysis.
  • Certify that systems and components meet quality standards established by applicable codes, publications, checklists, and specifications.
  • Review and verify system drawings and specifications for accuracy and completeness. Determine maintenance and inspection requirements, ensure compliance with technical standards, resolve discrepancies through research or physical inspection, and document changes.
  • Provide technical assistance and expertise on power electronic devices to clients and engineers. Participate in inspections, maintenance, and training of site personnel. Advise on proper maintenance practices, interpret technical publications, resolve technical issues, log work in Maximo, and recommend system improvements.
  • Organize resources and assist Battery Technicians with maintenance, installation, and inspection of Vented Wet Cell and VRLA batteries and related components.
  • Inspect battery charging and monitoring equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintain records of battery operating services.
  • Recommend additional maintenance or battery replacements based on preventative maintenance findings.
  • Perform occasional joint duties for training or emergency response.
  • Battery-related duties include maintaining, inspecting, installing, cleaning batteries and terminals, taking voltage, resistance, and specific gravity readings, refilling with water, recharging, replacing batteries, installing inter-cell straps, performing discharge tests, and keeping detailed logs.
  • Maintain operational expertise with instruments such as digital multimeters, power analyzers, infrared cameras, digital cameras, insulation testers, EMI/EMF meters, battery test equipment, and oscilloscopes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED + 7 years of experience.
  • Must be able to achieve and maintain Top Secret/SCI security clearance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex technical instructions, plans, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, maintenance practices, quality control procedures.
  • Ability to use a laptop, various software, and electronic communication devices.
  • Ability to evaluate complex electrical systems, perform damage assessments, estimate maintenance needs, diagnose malfunctions, and employ testing techniques.

Abilities:

  • Lift at least 100 pounds at once and 60 pounds for extended periods.
  • Relocate a 12-foot stepladder unassisted.
  • Work at heights up to 60 feet, climbing and maintaining balance on scaffolds, lifts, catwalks, and ladders.
  • Perform physical activities such as walking, climbing, lifting, squatting, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead.
  • Have good vision (corrected if necessary), color perception, and the ability to hear and communicate effectively in English.
  • Use ladders safely while carrying tools within weight limits.
  • Recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong.
  • Apply rules to specific problems to produce logical answers.
  • Combine information to form general rules or conclusions.
  • See details within a few feet.
  • Understand spoken information and ideas.
