Overview

The Custodian I performs semi-skilled custodial services for University facilities following established procedures and guidelines in the maintenance of buildings, classrooms, offices, lavatories and restrooms, and associated areas, their furnishings and equipment using manual tools and electrically-powered machines. The Custodian I also moves furniture and equipment for cleaning or for special events which may require carrying and erecting tables, chairs, stages, podiums, sound shells, and similar items indoors and out-of-doors. The work includes removal of snow and/or ice from exterior entrances, walkways and sidewalks.

General Function

The Custodian I performs semi-skilled custodial services for University facilities following established procedures and guidelines in the maintenance of buildings, classrooms, offices, lavatories and restrooms, and associated areas, their furnishings and equipment using manual tools and electrically-powered machines. The Custodian I also moves furniture and equipment for cleaning or for special events which may require carrying and erecting tables, chairs, stages, podiums, sound shells, and similar items indoors and out-of-doors. The work performed by Custodian I includes the removal of snow and/or ice from exterior entrances, walkways and sidewalks.

Description Of Primary Duties

  • Performs regular, scheduled, and directed floor and stairs maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered floor machines to sweep, vacuum, and mop floors and stairs, and strip and wax floors according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
  • Performs regular, scheduled, and directed carpet and upholstery maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered carpet extractors, shampooers, vacuums, back pack vacuums, and using upholstery tools according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
  • Cleans building furnishings (which may require limited moving of those furnishings) within assigned area by dusting, washing, and/or polishing office furniture and equipment such as desks, chairs, tables, word processing cabinets, bookcases, file cabinets, end tables, lamps, handrails, heat and air conditioning registers, trophy cases, ash stands, and similar fixtures.
  • Ensures that lavatories, restrooms, showers, and locker rooms are clean and sanitary by following prescribed procedures for sweeping, washing and/or scrubbing the restrooms, using specific chemicals for foaming and/or disinfecting facilities, restocking all appropriate paper products, refilling soap dispensers, replacing sanitary disposal liners, and removing all trash and waste products from lavatories and restrooms.
  • Cleans classroom or meeting room furniture and equipment by dry dusting blackboards and erasers and/or washing whiteboards, re-aligning classroom desks and/or tables and chairs, dust-mopping and damp-mopping hard surface floors or vacuuming carpeted floors, and collecting and removing all trash and waste products from the classrooms.
  • Cleans interior walls by removing adhesive tape, thumb tacks, paper pins, staples, and similar items, and washing and scrubbing the walls with prescribed wall cleaners to remove stains and graffiti.
  • Washes interior and exterior glass (windows, mirrors, door glass) using appropriate equipment and cleaners according to guidelines for use of cleaners.
  • Removes all trash from assigned areas by collecting trash from containers, transporting to designated outside dumpsters, and emptying the trash.
  • Removes all recyclable materials from assigned areas and transports them to designated recycling dumpsters, ensuring the dumpster is locked after dumping.
  • Uses cleaning chemicals safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, following directions for mixing, applying, and disposing of cleaners, solvents, and chemicals.
  • Unloads delivery trucks or collects cleaning supplies and transports them to storage facilities as needed.
  • Prepares spaces for special events by moving furniture and setting up equipment according to plans or instructions.
  • Assists in preventing accidents from snow or ice by shoveling/sweeping and applying salt or sand.
  • Responds to emergency situations by following prescribed procedures to prevent damage or injury.
  • Performs basic security checks and notifies authorities as needed.
  • Reports damage beyond capability to supervisor or safety offices.
  • May replace light bulbs, assist with laundry tasks, operate washers/dryers, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs cleaning and related duties at outdoor entryways or loading areas as assigned.
  • Maintains custodial equipment and ensures proper storage and maintenance.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

  • Education: Completion of the 10th grade required; significant custodial experience may substitute. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Experience: At least one year of custodial experience with knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and supplies.
  • Skills: Ability to read English to understand work orders and chemical instructions.
  • Effort: Ability to lift/carry up to 75 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally; frequent walking/standing; bending, stooping, reaching; climb ladders or stairs as needed; work indoors and outdoors. Some positions may be essential employees during severe weather.
  • Other: May be located in facilities designated as sensitive; exposure to chemicals; adherence to safety protocols.
