Overview
As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, the Infusion Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients. The Registered Nurse is accountable for the coordination of patient care and education to the patient and family in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices in a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment. Additionally, the Infusion RN provides therapeutic care to patients in the outpatient setting with an emphasis on administering chemotherapy, biotherapy, and blood products. This role may float to various locations for coverage and volume needs, including being expected to learn the workflows of different locations. Essential Duties
Follows policies and procedures: demonstrates ability to access online manuals and references Transfers learned scientific knowledge into practical application in applying the nursing process ASSESSMENT Interprets and completes nursing assessment and screening upon patient arrival to receive therapy DIAGNOSIS Interprets assessment information and formulates nursing diagnosis PLAN Maintains problem list, medication list and allergies list INTERVENTION Administers medications as ordered safely and efficiently utilizing appropriate precautions as necessary. Administers chemotherapy and biotherapy by following correct procedures by policy. Delegates tasks based on others scope of practice and competency. Acts as patient advocate in managing side effects DOCUMENTATION Documentation is complete and correct on all forms. Includes assessment and screening at each appointment including pain scale and review of possible side effects. Ensures consents are signed for all invasive procedures and the administration of blood products. Ensures medication is double checked and documented accurately EDUCATION Provides patient and family education as needed based on treatment plan or change in condition EQUIPMENT Maintains B/P machine, IV infusion pumps, continuous patient monitor; monitors volume and equipment alarms; correctly identifies and notifies appropriate department about defective equipment COMMUNICATION Communicates effectively with all members of the healthcare team including the patient and family; reports urgent patient care situations to inpatient area or department; conducts appropriate patient/family interactions; triages phone calls; uses e-mail SBAR ORGANIZATION Manages time effectively; organizes and prioritizes responsibilities; takes meal breaks without incurring overtime OBSERVES REGULATORY AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: National Patient Safety Goals; uses two patient identifiers; avoids unapproved abbreviations; uses procedural time out for invasive procedures; maintains medication reconciliation; ensures alarm management and waste handling; adheres to HIPAA and OSHA requirements; readiness for JCAHO surveys; ensures written orders are read back, signed, and dated with diagnosis QUALITY MEASURES Identifies and participates in data collection and process improvements PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Participates in professional hospital/nursing activities; relief charge nurse; nursing committees/councils; educational workshops; ONS membership; assists in developing or updating patient education materials Accepts and completes additional duties as assigned Professional certification Performs other related duties as assigned Required Qualifications
Req Bachelors Degree in Nursing (BSN) required upon hire Req 2 years RN experience in a related healthcare setting Req Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently Req Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand, follow and perform duties including whole blood collection and apheresis procedures in accordance with policies and procedures Preferred Qualifications
Pref Masters degree in Nursing or related field, or in progress; Masters Degree in Nursing may be in lieu of a Bachelors Degree in Nursing Pref Oncology focus experience strongly preferred Pref Experience administering chemotherapy and/or other types of infusions Required Licenses/Certifications
Req Registered Nurse - RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing) Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association Req ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy; if not certified upon hire, certification must be obtained within 90 days of meeting eligibility criteria Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if no card upon hire, obtain within 30 days and maintain renewal by expiration date (required within LA City only) Pref Specialty Certification in oncology The hourly rate range for this position is $53.00 - $87.45.
