Responsibilities

  • The Nurse Manager performs advanced (senior-level) nursing functions such as planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating the provision of nursing care on a 24-hour basis. The Nurse Manager directs daily operations in all assigned areas and facilitates the identification and implementation of Standards of Practice consistent with HHSC and State Hospital rules and regulations, TAC, and the Texas State Board of Nursing.
  • Ensures a competent workforce, provides clinical direction and expertise, and ensures care is based on individual patient characteristics.
  • Participates in the development and support of partnerships within the hospital, with recovery teams, patients and families, and external organizations to facilitate community involvement and awareness; participates in performance improvement activities; supervises others; works under limited supervision with initiative and independent judgement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response/COOP participation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
  • Attends work regularly and may be scheduled for specific, rotating, extended, or overtime shifts in accordance with agency policy.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs) and Professional Practice

  • Serves as the spokesperson for professional practice of program-based nursing services and participates in performance improvement, nursing indicators, audits, peer reviews, and death reviews.
  • Promotes an environment that empowers nurses, develops nursing policies and procedures, and supports 24/7 nursing coverage.
  • Facilitates, coaches, and supervises strategies to ensure optimal nursing services; ensures reporting of trends in nursing care; provides clinical direction based on developmental level and specialized patient needs; collaborates with recovery teams on trauma-informed care; ensures Standards of Practice align with regulatory standards.
  • Acts as a resource on nursing practices and education; participates in QAPI initiatives; oversees program nursing service manuals; protects patient rights and addresses issues from care reports and incident reporting; conducts clinical reviews and raises safety/risk concerns with leadership.
  • Manages nurse staffing plans, ensures 24/7 nursing availability, and evaluates annual staffing requirements to promote a safe environment compliant with standards; participates in budget and resource allocation with leadership; engages with external organizations and stakeholders for community involvement.
  • Designs and delivers a high-quality system of care using a multidisciplinary approach; supports clinical rotations with academic partners; participates in committees and promotes positive external relationships; collects customer feedback for improvement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of Texas Nurse Practice Act and peer review in professional nursing; management theory and organizational performance; Recovery Model of Care; training principles and group dynamics; psychiatric nursing standards and curricula including CPR, AIMS, TIPS, and PNA.
  • Skills in patient care, teamwork, and using computer systems; skills in administering restraint and seclusion; strong coaching, budgeting, and supervisory abilities; ability to organize, train, supervise, and communicate effectively; ability to interpret standards and regulations; ability to manage time and develop learning objectives; ability to address therapeutic interventions for psychiatric disorders and perform TIPS/CPR/first aid.

Licensure, Registrations or Certifications

Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Texas, or in a party state recognizing reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Initial Screening Criteria

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with nursing major, or an accredited nursing program and at least one year of RN experience in a recognized health facility; OR three (3) years of RN experience in a recognized health facility.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and LEIE. Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service. Applicants must be at least 18; Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21. Flexible work hours; overtime may be required. Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required. Vaccinations may be required; if not immunized for influenza, masking and other measures may be required.
