Responsibilities

  • Performs moderately complex custodial work for assigned locations including office buildings, premises and/or resident living units.
  • Cleans, dusts, disinfects, and sanitizes to maintain a safe and healthy environment.
  • Operates floor maintenance equipment (strippers, buffers, vacuums, extractors).
  • Requests and restocks supplies; assists in inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and needed repairs.
  • Assists in minor building and equipment repairs and installations; trains other custodians as needed.
  • Maintains assigned custodial equipment in good working order and keeps outside areas clear of trash and debris.
  • Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • Essential Job Functions (EJFs) Attends work regularly, may work specific or rotating schedules, overtime as needed, and may serve in on-call status to meet facility needs.
  • Performs custodial tasks on schedule with high quality, including cleaning windows and light fixtures and ensuring proper sanitization and disinfection per training.
  • Maintains interior and exterior of buildings, reports repairs, and replenishes supplies.
  • Trains and coaches other custodians and provides documentation of training.
  • Inspects areas for cleanliness and minor repairs; performs minor maintenance as required.
  • Completes documentation accurately; protects confidential information; maintains inventory and equipment records.
  • Supports resident health and safety; participates in agency disaster response/COOP as needed (may require alternate shifts or locations).

  • Ability to train others and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and residents
  • Ability to work irregular hours

Registrations, Licensure, Certifications

  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain within 90 days after hire to drive a state vehicle
  • Out-of-state driver license requires original certified driving record per HHSC Fleet Management policy

Initial Screening Criteria

  • Graduation from standard senior high school or equivalent; or
  • Paid work experience in any field; or
  • Unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience

Preferred

  • Six months of custodial or environmental services experience in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or other similar setting

Additional Information

  • Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and LEIE)
  • Selective Service registration required for males aged 18–25
  • All state employees are subject to random drug testing
  • Flexibility in work hours; overtime and weekends/holidays may be required
