The Broward Sheriff's Office is offering condensed testing for out-of-area candidates. Human Resources will schedule and coordinate the selection process within a short time frame to minimize travel. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses. Minimum age of 19 years. United States Citizen at time of application (F.S. 943.13(2)). High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required. Associate's degree (or higher), 60+ college credits, and/or military experience preferred. Supporting documentation must be attached to the application for consideration. Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult. All other arrests and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. All candidates must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13). If ever arrested, candidates must submit official court documents and police reports with the application. A written statement explaining the arrest and the outcome must also be attached to the application for review. Official court documents can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred. Documents must be submitted with your application. Must successfully pass the swimming and physical agility tests prior to submitting an application. Your test results must be submitted with your application. Must successfully pass the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) prior to submitting an application. Your test results must be submitted with your application. Military veterans with an honorable discharge from the military or candidates with at least an Associate's Degree are exempt from having to complete the CJBAT. If you are a military veteran with an honorable discharge or if you hold an Associate's Degree (or higher), you must submit a copy of your DD214 Member 4 form or Service form (updated Feb 2022) or a copy of your Associate's Degree (or higher) with your application in lieu of the CJBAT test. If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form to the online application. Must possess and maintain throughout employment a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance. Driver license must show current address. All candidates must submit with the application a certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history. Florida driving histories can be obtained at any courthouse in Broward County. Three (3) year, seven (7) year, and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted. If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past ten (10) years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state. For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles. The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources. Driving history records must be attached to the online application. As part of the selection process, all applicants who successfully pass the oral interview are required to complete a Pre-Employment Fitness Test with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The Pre-Employment Fitness Test is designed to assess the physical fitness level of a candidate prior to pre-academy entry and is based on the exercises performed in the academy. To measure an individual’s capability to perform these critical tasks, candidates must undergo these seven (7) physical components: Pull-Ups
— Upper body strength. Untimed. 12 Repetitions. Sit-Ups
— Abdominal/trunk endurance. 2 minutes. 85 Repetitions. Push-Ups
— Upper body muscular endurance. 2 minutes. 60 Repetitions. Mountain Climbers
— Abdominal/trunk endurance and cardiovascular fitness. 1 minute. 41 Repetitions. Bend & Twist
— Flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. 1 minute. 60 Repetitions. Squat Thrusts
— Full-body strength and cardiovascular fitness. 1 minute. 35 Repetitions. ½ Mile Run
— Aerobic power. Timed. Completed in 3:00 minutes or less. Each component is scored out of 100 points. The total possible score is 700. To pass the test, a participant must achieve at least 385 points overall, which represents a score of 55%. After passing the oral interview, candidates will be provided a medical clearance form and a hold harmless release form. These forms must be completed and submitted via email before you can be scheduled for the Pre-Employment Fitness Test. If you successfully pass (55% overall score) the Pre-Employment Fitness Test, you will be notified and moved to the next stage of the selection process. Nature of Work and Fitness Testing
This is entry level work which provides opportunity for practical experience and broad exposure to the fundamentals of law enforcement functions within the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Work involves attending a Police Academy intended to provide preparatory training for a career in law enforcement. The position participates in training programs and performs varied routine and technical non-sworn tasks in support of sworn law enforcement functions. All cadets attending the Broward College Institute of Public Safety must successfully attain a minimum score of 75% on at least one Physical Profile test. Failure to attain the 75% score on one of the Physical Profile tests will result in the cadet's removal from the Academy and potential separation of employment from BSO. Upon successful completion of the Law Enforcement Academy and State Officer Certification Exam, candidates will be eligible for the position of Certified Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff earning an annual salary of

Depending on functional area of assignment, physical requirements may include: reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, dragging/pushing/pulling heavy objects, and exposure to heat, weather, noise, chemicals, electrical currents, pathogens, violence, weapons, explosives, animals. Some tasks require standing, sitting or walking for long periods. Safety equipment and body armor may be required. Must have the physical ability to meet rifle qualification standards.
