Department of Transportation Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the District Division Chief of the Division of Land Surveys, a Supervising Transportation Surveyor, the Senior Transportation Surveyor plans, organizes, supervises, and directs the field activities of three to five Transportation Surveyor Party Chiefs, personnel including other Professional Land Surveyors, technicians, interns, and student assistants, and all field related activities to support Caltrans' Mission, Vision, and Goals. Possession of a valid California Land Surveyor's license is required. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the SENIOR TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR (CALTRANS) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
This position works in a climate controlled environment with artificial lighting, with occasional off‑site meetings, and diverse field environments, including uneven terrain, and various weather conditions. Multi‑floor buildings are equipped with elevators. The incumbent may also be required to travel overnight to Imperial County and may also be required to travel to meetings in other parts of the State. Travel may be by automobile or commercial conveyances such as airlines or trains. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required to operate a state vehicle. Minimum Requirements
SENIOR TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR (CALTRANS) Special Requirements
Possession of a valid California Land Surveyor's license is required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle. Applicants must also submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). The SOQ is a discussion of how an applicant's education, training, experience, and skills meet the criteria in the duty statement and qualify the applicant for this position. Failure to include and complete the SOQ as instructed may not be considered and may result in disqualification for the interview. Resumes and cover letters will not take the place of the SOQ. The SOQ must follow the number format, must respond to the criteria below, must not exceed two pages in length, and be typed in size 11 Arial font. Describe your knowledge and education related to the use of modern surveying technology to perform various surveys for design, photogrammetry, boundary, monumentation and construction. Provide examples that demonstrate your experience leading an innovative team while balancing/organizing multiple projects to meet schedules and budgets. Describe your experience leading a survey crew (or crews) that includes managing vehicles, equipment, supplies, data/records management, quality assurance, and quality control. Describe your experience using AutoCAD Civil3d, Microstation, Trimble Business Center, ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, writing technical reports, communicating with customers, and participating on project development teams. Describe your experience supervising employees including mentoring, training, managing work schedules, evaluating performance, and implementing progressive discipline. Describe your experience developing and implementing policies, procedures and innovations that enhance worker and public safety. Application Instructions
