About the Opportunity
The Controller will be a key leader in the organization, responsible for overseeing all accounting functions for the real estate development entity, corporate entities, and a portfolio of owned and managed properties. This role requires a strong technical accounting background, expert knowledge of property management accounting (including development/construction), and proven experience managing the monthly close, financial reporting, and the General Ledger to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely financial information for management and investors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manage and oversee all general ledger activity, including chart of accounts maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliation processes for corporate and property entities. Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP (or other required basis). Coordinate and manage the monthly and year-end financial close process for all entities, including review of closing packages and supporting schedules. Perform detailed financial analysis of variances (budget vs. actual) and provide clear explanations to management and property teams. Oversee treasury management, including monitoring daily cash balances, managing bank reconciliations, and executing funding requests/distributions. Direct all property-level accounting, including A/R, A/P, lease administration, and rent roll integrity. Manage the annual budget and reforecast process for the property portfolio, working closely with Property Managers and Asset Managers. Oversee and review Common Area Maintenance (CAM), Real Estate Tax, and operating expense reconciliations and billings for commercial properties. Ensure accurate recording of lease transactions, including straight-line rent calculations and ASC 842 compliance. Manage the accounting for capital expenditures, fixed assets, and depreciation/amortization. Team Leadership and Process Improvement
Supervise, mentor, and lead the accounting team (e.g., Property Accountants, Accounts Payable staff). Drive process efficiencies and improvements in accounting systems and workflows, particularly within the property management software (e.g., Yardi, MRI). Collaborate effectively with other departments, including Asset Management, Property Management, and Development. Qualifications
Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years in a Controller or Senior Accounting Manager role within the commercial or multifamily real estate industry. Real Estate Expertise: Deep understanding of real estate property management and development accounting principles, including General Ledger, CAM reconciliations, and job costing. Technical Skills: Expert proficiency in real estate specific accounting software (e.g., Yardi, MRI, Timberline, or similar) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
