This entry level, non-sworn classification participates in pre-academy training and the police-training academy.
Essential functions / Responsibilities
Ensure Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest ethical standards.
Respond to calls for service regarding accidents, emergencies, crimes, threats, altercations and requests for aid; provide information and assistance to the public.
Emphasize a Community-Based Policing philosophy focused on community interaction and collaborative problem solving.
Administer first aid to injured persons; interview, interrogate and record statements from witnesses, suspects and victims; identify facts and prepare written reports.
Apprehend suspects by driving safely, pursuing on foot, overcoming obstacles, using self-defense and arrest control techniques, and using firearms under appropriate conditions.
Enforce traffic laws, direct traffic, issue citations and warnings; investigate accidents and accident scenes.
Investigate matters involving juveniles, report child neglect and juvenile delinquency; refer juveniles to appropriate authorities.
Serve subpoenas and warrants, testify in court, handle evidence, and confer with the City/District Attorney for case preparation.
Perform duties safely and efficiently; perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
Qualifications
Experience:
None required.
Education / Training:
Graduation from high school or equivalent (State Board certificate, GED, CHSPE, HiSET, CPP).
License(s) / Certification(s):
Valid Class C California driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Exceptional customer service practices.
Make independent judgments and decisions based on standard policy or procedure.
Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors.
Model and practice high ethical standards; remain calm in threatening or violent situations.
Develop skills through on-the-job training and meet performance standards by the end of probation.
Establish smooth working relationships and resolve interpersonal conflicts; foster teamwork.
Read, write and comprehend directions in English; speak Armenian fluently.
Other characteristics / Special conditions
Willingness to maintain a safe working environment; overtime as requested.
Applicants must be of good moral character with no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
Must be at least 21 years of age at appointment; must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
TATTOO POLICY: tattoos or body art must be completely covered while on duty, unless exempted by the Chief of Police. For details, contact the Professional Standards Bureau.
Desirable qualifications include knowledge and/or use of personal computers.
Medical/psychological standards: must pass pre-placement medical examination and psychological evaluation.
Hearing: acceptable as per City standards; residence requirement within sixty miles of Glendale within four months of employment.
Equivalency: an equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may be considered as substitute for listed minimum requirements.

WRITTEN EXAM: Must complete the Law Enforcement - Frontline National exam through the National Testing Network by November 6, 2025 and no earlier than one year from application; select City of Glendale to share results.
TIMING / EXAM DETAILS: Visit NationalTestingNetwork.com for steps and targets; NTN minimum passing scores are: Video 63%, Writing 70%, Reading 70%.
Evaluation of applications: minimum requirements reviewed; qualifying applicants invited to participate in the selection process.
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST: PASS/FAIL with specified activities (stairs, obstacles, dummy drag, trigger pull, etc.).
PRELIMINARY BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE: PASS/FAIL for background standards; may include polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting.
ORAL INTERVIEW: weight 100%; must pass exam component with minimum score to be placed on eligible list.
PERFORMANCE TEST: assesses bilingual abilities in Armenian and English proficiency.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: comprehensive investigation; may disqualify for significant issues or omissions. Polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting will be conducted.
ENTRY-LEVEL EXAMINATION: veteran’s credit awarded; DD214 required if applicable.
Time and place of examination announced; City may modify components/weights with notice to candidates.
