Overview
A Reserve Police Officer is a citizen volunteer who serves the community through a devotion of valuable time and effort toward a common goal: creating a safer community. Reserve Police Officers wear the same uniform and perform the same duties as regular Police Officers, but on a part-time volunteer basis. They receive compensation for court appearances; specific assignments are approved by the Office of the Chief of Police and may be eligible for a uniform allowance on a scheduled basis. Reserve Police Officers are a valuable resource to both the community and the Glendale Police Department. This entry-level, non-sworn classification participates in pre-academy training and the actual police-training academy.
Essential functions
Ensure Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.
Participate in pre-academy and actual Police training academy in preparation to perform the essential functions performed by Police Officers.
Respond to calls for service regarding accidents, emergencies, crimes, threats, altercations and/or requests for aid.
Provide information and assistance to the public and promote good public relations.
Administer first aid to injured persons.
Interview, interrogate and record statements from witnesses, suspects and victims.
Identify relevant facts and prepare written reports on incidents and cases assigned.
Promote community-based policing programs that emphasize collaborative problem solving between law enforcement and the community.
Apprehend suspects by driving safely at high speeds, chasing on foot, climbing over obstacles, or using self-defense techniques as appropriate.
Enforce traffic laws, direct traffic, issue citations and warnings; investigate accidents and accident scenes; investigate matters involving juveniles, reports of child neglect and juvenile delinquency.
Refer juveniles to the appropriate authorities.
Serve subpoenas, warrants, testify in court, handle evidence, and confer with City/District Attorney’s Office for case preparation.
May drive on City business as necessary.
Assume personal responsibility for performing duties safely and efficiently.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Experience / Education / Licenses
Experience:
None.
Education/Training:
Graduation from high school or equivalent (state board certificate of proficiency, GED, CHSPE/HiSET/CPP).
License(s)/Certification(s):
Valid Class C California driver’s license.

Making independent judgments and decisions based on standard policy or procedure.
Ability:
Provide exceptional customer service to all employees and vendors; model and practice ethical conduct; stay calm in threatening situations; develop skills through on-the-job training; resolve conflicts; emphasize community-based policing; foster teamwork; read, write and comprehend directions in English; write clear, accurate reports.
Other Characteristics
Willingness:
Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment; work overtime as requested.
Special Conditions
Must be of good moral character with no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at appointment as a Police Officer.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Tattoo policy: no visible tattoos while on duty unless exempted by the Chief of Police; tattoos must be covered in uniform, business attire or casual dress. Contact Professional Standards Bureau for details.
Desirable Qualifications: Knowledge or use of personal computers.
Medical/Psychological Standards: Pre-placement medical and psychological evaluation required.
Hearing: Acceptable as per City standards.
Residence: Within four months of employment, live within 60 contiguous miles of Glendale Civic Center.
Note: An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for listed minimum requirements.

Ensure submission of scores to Glendale and follow prompts.
The minimum NTN passing scores for Glendale are: Video 63%, Writing 70%, Reading 70%. Scores are automatically forwarded to Glendale after the exam. Passing candidates will be referred to Glendale’s candidate list and will be invited to participate in further stages of the selection process.
Evaluation / Testing Stages
Evaluation of Application:
Applications reviewed to ensure minimum requirements are met; qualifying applicants will be invited to participate.
Physical Agility Test:
Pass/Fail; components include stair climb with equipment, obstacle climbs, dummy drag, trigger pull, beam walk, and more. Scheduled 10/18/2025.
Preliminary Background Questionnaire:
Pass/Fail to determine background eligibility.
Oral Interview:
Weight of 100%; minimum 70% to be placed on eligible list.
Background Investigation:
Comprehensive review, including polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting; disqualifications for significant issues or omissions.
Entry-Level Examination:
Veteran’s credit awarded; DD214 may be requested.
Examination Details:
Time and place announced; City reserves right to modify components/weights; accommodation offered for disabilities; immigration/work requirements apply.
