Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property at GEICO. This in-house IP role focuses on developing GEICO’s patent portfolio, supporting the GEICO brand, advising on IP strategy, and handling diverse IP issues as needed. Responsibilities
Conduct invention harvesting sessions, decide on patent filings, and manage outside patent counsel for patent application drafting and prosecution. Deliver IP trainings to software engineering, UX/UI design, product, and business teams. Develop strategies for managing risk related to third-party IP and IP disputes. Manage outside trademark counsel for filing and prosecution of trademark applications and renewals. Engage in IP enforcement, including addressing unauthorized online uses of GEICO’s trademarks. Support GEICO engineering with respect to open source licensing and open source community participation. Develop and enhance IP-related corporate policies. Advise the company on IP issues. Qualifications
J.D. or LL.M. from an accredited law school, active license to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, and registration as a patent attorney with the USPTO. Undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, or significant software experience. At least five years of experience practicing intellectual property law, with substantial patent drafting and prosecution experience. Deep understanding of patent law as applied to software (patent eligibility, 35 USC 101). Willingness to learn and take on new areas; ability to work autonomously and collaborate within the Legal department and with internal clients. Hybrid position requiring in-office presence three days a week. Preferred Qualifications
In-house legal experience. Technical background in software engineering or related fields. Experience with open source software, design patents, trademark practice, IP litigation, licensing, and IP support for commercial transactions. Position Details
